Please help with identification
    #1517627 -

Hey guys, I found some mushrooms that I need help with identifying. I have found p. cubensis mushrooms several times before by looking in the right places, but these look just like the p. cubensis and popped up randomly in the grass. Their caps are about 20-40 mm in diameter and the stems are hollow and about 60-75 mm in length. The spores appear to be dark purple/black. They DO NOT bruise blue, therefore I doubt they are active. They grow only in clusters it seems, and on ground that has been covered with leaves for the entire winter. They appeared last fall after the rain and today they appeared once again. This is in the northeast.. Boston, Mass. to be precise. When I was going through the Hunting FAQ at http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23488 I noticed that they look incredibly like the Psilocybe stuntzii. Some pictures are below. Any help would definitely be appreciated.

I see everybody else already got to you. Those look like Coprinus micaceus, a common mushroom in spring.

To verify the species you should check (with a magnifier) to see some tiny mica like particles on the cap. They can wash off, so try to find some young ones to check.

Assuming you can verify them, they are edible when the gills are still white. Once they start turning black they get pretty nasty and I don't know anybody who'd want to try to eat them then.

Happy mushrooming!
