just got a new rifle (marlin 795). optics suggestions?
    #15121648 -

hey everyone. so i just boght myself a new Marlin 795 .22lr rifle (http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/selfloading/795.asp). right out of the box it shoots great and is pretty reliable and accurate for a $130 gun. the sights on it are, however, pretty simple and flimsy (basically the same sights you would find on a bb gun). They do the trick for now but i really want to upgrade them and am torn between adding better iron sights or a red dot.

if i go with the iron sights option which is the more practical of the two i will buy these tech sights (http://www.tech-sights.com/). I've only heard good things about these and i want to get a set regardless of whether or not i get the red dot (but right now were talking about what i want to get first).

if i go with the red dot i'm gunna buy this Bushnell Trophy 1x32mm (http://www.red-dot-scopes.com/bushnell-trophy-1x32mm-red-dot-green-dot-riflescope-with-built-in-weaver-mount-730132p.html), mounted to the marlin using this dovetail to weaver rail adaptor (http://www.amazon.com/UTG-11mm-Weaver-Adapter-Adjustable/dp/B001CJ67E6) . i know this optic is a little bit unnecessary for this rifle but i see it as an investment and its just so dam cool for the price. the only thing im not sure about is mounting it using the adaptor. will the screws that tighten it to the dovetail on the marlin be enough to keep it in place, or would i have to drill out a hole in the receiver for the "vertical stop pin" (i have no gunsmithing experience at all)?

depends

I had to modify a dovetail adapter to work on my .22, it was too loose otherwise.  The modification involved involved constructing two shims out of an old beer can.  Good luck.

did it seem loose when you first put it on or did you notice it after shooting a little? i put the adaptor on to see how it fit on the rifle and it seemed very tight and sturdy with just the two side screws tightened.

sweet, i was hoping i wouldn't have to get the adaptor permanently attached so i could switch between iron sights and the red dot depending on the situation.

Whatever you do, get something that's rimfire acceptable.

I have a .17hmr with a BSA 9x12 and it loses sighting from time to time. Something about rimfire cartridges, I'd think they would be easier on the scope than a .308 or bigger.

Who knows.

I also have the same scope on my 7mm and it holds it's sighting no matter how much I shoot it. Center fire though.

why would an optic made for centerfire rifles not be able to handle the drastically less amount of recoil from a rimfire .22?

i agree %100, when i used to live in Tucson alcohol was as integral a part of my shooting as it is in bowling. nothing like blasting champagne and beer bottles to pieces in the desert while drinkin miller light, smoking reds and bowls of american grown ganja.

That's something I've never really looked into, but they specifically make optics for rimfires.

My only experience with those are Trijicon ACOG's and EOTECH's. So unless you wanna spend $500-1500 on optics for your .22lr, I'm afraid I have no advice for you.

But one thing I have found with optics, you definitely get what you pay for.

i think they make optics for rimfire because the have to handle less recoil, require less magnification and therefore can be smaller, lighter and less well built. just my guess though.

the tech sights are military style "post and aperture" style iron sights not red dots or any high tech shit like that. check out the link i posted of them

bushnell is not that great. they are better that nothing.
prolly what I would put on my .22

I'd recommend and use Nikon on My deer rifle's.

well i am getting it for a .22 so thats good i guess, but i was planning on using it on another gun in the future. how do they preform on .556 or .223 rifles? im thinking about doing an AR build and i would probably throw this sight on top if i already had it, but if its really that low quality i would just get some good iron sights cause there's no way i could afford a high quality red dot.

a .223 isn't gonna have a hard kick, so no worries in it screwing with the sights getting
misaligned from repeated shooting.  when I bought my wife a .243 it came with a bushnell  3-9x40mm
it's a great scope for what it is and served her well until I put a nikon prostaff with drop bubble compensators on it.

im also getting the tech sights soon. i'll post some before an after pics once i start making the upgrades.
