A Word of Warning from Veteran Hard Drinkers (10+ yr) to the Kids who Drink Like There's No Tomorrow
    #15081734 -

Fortunately I'm a very light drinker, it just doesnt agree with me. Sometimes its nice, at other times just a few glasses makes me feel ill and just wish it would go away.

But I see it in my father. The good man was a genius, no exaggeration there, but over the decades he average consumption of about 5 glasses a day just dimmed more and more of his brightness. Now he has all sorts of health complaints, which have one thing in common: if he does force himself to not drink, they become much less or disappear. But as he puts it, life without a few drinks in the evening just doesnt feel right for him

My brother never learned to party without alcohol, wine to be exact. A party without wine to him holds little appeal beyond a meeting. He can't "get loose" without the vinous social lubricant.

I was wondering whether our veterans to substantial drinking have some wordsd of advice and personal experiences to share to our younger members who are still under ther impression they are immortal and on top of the world.

After your decade(s) of hard drinking, what advice do you have, what would you do differently? It could be advice upward from the simple advice to down two glasses of water before sleeping to lessen hangovers, to more compelling advice and insight.

Please state for how long you have drinking experience and what your averages are.

Help the young 'uns out here

I don't see how some of the college kids do it man. I like to get drunk sometimes, but I can't day after day. It makes me feel like shit if I drink a lot. I prefer taking a few shots and smoking a joint or something with some good friends over getting smashed any day.

I have been a regular drinker many times excessive (20-30 drinks/week) for 16 years.  I took a few breaks here and there.  A few months ago, I just got bored with it and have been drinking much less (2-3 drinks/week).  Since I backed off, I have been feeling much healthier.  Sleeping better, better cognition, etc.

5 drinks a day does not make your dad a "hard drinker".  My dad is 64, and has probably had the same daily habit as your dad for much of his life.  He doesn't seem any less bright today than he was 20 years ago.  He does have an extremely high natural tolerance though.  I've only seen him drunk a handful of times...

Anyway, I've been drinking for 13 years.  Between 18 and 21, I drank whenever I could find someone old enough to buy booze for me.  After I turned 21, I drank every day for a year!  Nowadays I am mostly a weekend warrior.  I'll have a few once and a while after work during the week, but I go all out on Fri/Sat, sometimes drinking up to a case in a night!

My biggest piece of advice is to figure out how many drinks it takes to put you over the legal driving limit, and strictly limit yourself to 1 fewer than that if you have to drive somewhere.  I always keep a blanket and a pillow in my car, so if I drink too many I'll just crash on the couch/floor and sleep it off.  I've never driven drunk in my life, but have a few friends who fucked up their lives in a big way by getting DUI's.  It's just not worth it!

also:
Beer before liquor, never been sicker.  Liquor before beer, you're in the clear!

I watched my mother basically drink herself to death. She would drink either 2 liters of vodka or 1 liter of vodka and 2 bottles of wine every single day. She did this from the time I was young enough to realize till the day she died. If youve ever seen someone at the lowest point of a truly hardcore drinking binge you prolly wouldnt ever drink again. You get to a point you stop sleeping shed stay awake for a week at a time youll stop eating all together, my mom at maybe a meal a day if she remembered. She only weighed about 90ish pounds she was 5'4". She wrecked 3 cars in the last years of her life. Your body starts to decompose, you begin to release a smell that is ungodly its like rotten trash and body odor and it never goes away. You become a pathalogical liar unable to remember basic things about yourself and others. She would fall all the time, i cant even count the times i had to run across town because of a frantic call from my sister or grandma. I loved her with all my heart. My mom didnt make it to 60 she died days before her birthday. She was the first person in my closest family to pass away she didnt even outlast her father or mother.

My biggest piece of advice is to not drink and drive, period. Why try to find the edge and then balance on it?

On-topic: yeah, I have a couple of alcoholics in my social network. They are, invariably, depraved, for lack of a better word. I always find alcoholics pathetic in a sort of adorable way. That sounds odd, I know, but they happen to be the good-natured kind, which at least makes their alcoholism somewhat bearable for the people around them.

Well you must be lucky, for lack of a better word, to have only been around those kinds of alcoholics.

Yup, I consider myself lucky in that respect (and many others). But truth be told, if I encountered one of the bad kind now, I wouldn't allow him/her to get close to me.

Well if you ever want to meet the really bad ones just go hang around in the towns built around military bases.

I was very much aware of that possibility when I posted that, and I consider myself very lucky that I wasn't born into it!

I'm sure you're right. Which is one of the reasons I wouldn't want to live in a 'military' town. In fact, the next town down the road from mine is home to a military educational institute, and for that reason alone, the night life there has an unpleasant edge to it.

I didn't say balance on the edge.  I know for a fact that after 3 drinks, I am never anywhere near .08, but at 4 drinks I am in the neighborhood of .08-.09.  Because of this fact, I never drive if I've had more than 3 drinks, period.  It's a rule that has worked for me over 13 years of drinking, so I was just passing it on as advice...

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you're being irresponsible. But what always annoys me is that people are sometimes too quick in regarding the legal limit as equal to the safe limit. While far below the legal limit, an individual's responses can already be much slower (and yes, the reverse can be true as well, especially if you're an experienced drinker...) See, that's what triggered me in that statement. For myself, I know I can safely drive after one drink if I am well-fed and -rested, but if I'm tired and worn out, I know that even a single drink makes it irresponsible to drive (well, in my opinion).

I have a friend whose father committed suicide while suffering from Psychosis caused by alcohol addiction.
I wonder why this isn't rammed down our throats everyday like it is for other substances?

I did the usual, drink loads when your younger. Luckily I started smoking Marijuana and cut down because of that. Defiantly glad I cut down, nights out are much cheaper as well.

God takes those closest to us, because it makes him feel better about himself. He is a very vengeful God. He's all pissed off about something we did thousands of years ago. He just can't get over it, so he doesn't care who he takes. Children, puppies, it don't matter to him, so long as it makes us sad.

Why does God give us anything?

Look at it this way: if you want to make a baby cry, first you give it a lollipop. Then you take it away. If you never give it a lollipop to begin with, it would have nothin' to cry about. That's like God, who gives us life and love and help just so that he can tear it all away and make us cry, so he can drink the sweet milk of our tears. You see, it's our tears, Stan, that give God his great power.

You do make a good point about being tired.  Driving tired is just as bad as driving drunk.  If you're already tired when you start drinking, the alcohol will just make it worse.  I usually don't feel like drinking when I'm tired, so I didn't think of that scenario.

Ok, for educational purposes:
Alcoholic #1: his wife divorced him, because he's an alcoholic. He lives a marginal life, has no partner. Enjoys the times he goes out with his family (his son, friend of mine, sometimes takes him out for a drink), but he's always regarded as a bit of a benign loser. My friend told me he went on vacation with his dad once, but he wouldn't want to repeat the experience. There you are: even your son (who can take his drink really well himself) doesn't want to hang out with you for more than a day anymore. Way to go.

Alcoholic #2: still married, but that's just keeping up appearances. It's the only thing he can keep up btw, because apparently, sex has become physically impossible. His wife wants them to move to another house, but of course, he doesn't want to bother. He helps out his daughter with odd jobs around the house, but he fails miserably at even the simplest of tasks. He was trained as a chef, but needless to say, years of heavy drinking has destroyed his taste buds, so he couldn't even season a dish if he was sober enough to cook it in the first place. Not to mention he's had a heart attack in his late forties, and his family is basically expecting him to drop dead any moment. He's in his late fifties now.

As I said before, these are drunkards of the benign type; they're social people who aren't too bad to be around. But even so, they become annoying pretty quickly, and they are both pretty unhealthy. Drinking will take at least 20 years off their lives. You might think "that's ok, live briefly, but enjoy the time you're here", except I'm not so sure they enjoy their time very much. Quality of life isn't that high if your family can't stand being around you and you can't get it up anymore.

I started drinking at 18
partied on the weekends my first two years of college moderate drinking really
after transferring to a huge D1 school and getting involved in greek life it's usually heavy drinking 2-4 nights a week depending on class assignments and what's going on

i defiantly feel the negative effects of alcohol the day after, but after a couple days off they've all but faded
