contaminated verm?
    #1496387 - 04/26/03 04:54 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

I cased a nice big bin filled with perfectly colinized straw, and it contaminated! How is this possible? I cooked the verm on 200 for 30 minutes.

The contamination is green on the white mycelium. Also, there seems to be some grass like things growing in the straw that I assume is young straw. How is that possible if I cooked the hay and all?

Thanks.

Did you use straw or hay? Hay contaminates much more easily.

There could be any number of other reasons. More details are needed.

If you have grass growing in the straw, the straw was not properly pasteurized. Verm alone can not support the growth of contams so there is no need to sterilize verm but you must pasteurize the straw. Also, mold mycelium is pure white and looks like shroom mycelium. It only changes color when it begins to form spores. The green material is mold spores. The "colonized" straw may have been colonized with mold even before you added the verm.

OK, two follow ups:

1. How long should I cook the straw for? I was doing 1 hr at around 150. How long do you cook it for and at what temps?

2. If I have to sterilize the verm, then does that mean I have to worry about it becoming contaminated after cooking?

Thanks!

i give my straw 90 mins at 170.
i sterilise my casing layer in quart jars in the pc - this is a new one on me, i used to just nuke it, but it kept greening on me.

the biggest problem i had back when i used pure verm casing was dactylium (cobweb). i recommend you make your casing with some or all of the following ingredients: verm, peat, coir, oyster, chalk (and water).

1. My friend pasteurizes his straw in water at 165F for 45-50 minutes.

2. Be reasonably clean and it will be fine.

Yeah, I use a mix of verm, coir, and lime to case. I think the issue here must be the straw, since it is GROWING!! I knew that was a problem when no one was talking about this happening.
