Why would it be?  Both are listed as living in your state.  Is it because you are a 100 miles out of what is considered its "range"?

I'm going to go with if it has a rattle and it has yellow bands and its as thick as your arm its either a timber rattle snake or a Canebreak.

Altitude and climate in my region of the state is not conducive to such snakes. they can't survive the winters. Trust me, i've been here a long time. Timber rattlers are exceedingly rare so much that they aren't listed as native. That's the closest thing though i agree with that. I mean it is summer, they certainly could have come up but i don't know why they'd leave the heat of the rest of the state considering the fact that they're cold-blooded and even a mild summer night here could compromise their homeostasis.

I doubt it had much to do with the temps but more the climate/environment. After all, they can survive over winter in Wisconsin and Vermont... Those places get COOOLLDDD.

Probably was a timber rattler. I've seen a lot of herps in places they shouldn't be lately. My parents live about 35 miles north of Atlanta... Never saw green treefrogs my whole life there, always had to go about 100-150 miles south to find them. Now I find them almost everytime I go home to visit.

yeah im pretty much stumped. manbearpig is fucking everything up. hopefully the forest service specialist will be able to give me more info. i dont care what kind it is i just need to know if there's another species of pit viper in the area. i take people on guided hikes and shit so im the medical authority and more highly certified than an MD in the case of a backcountry emergency so that' why im so serious abut this.

Forest Service specialist says it's likely a very strange color variation on a timber rattler. I'm gonna go with that and hope it's right. Anyway, thanks for all the help folks and if i ever come across it again i'll be sure to post a pic cause it was a cool fucking snake. Sorry i was such a dick for a minute there :sorry:

I felt the same way. The specialist said it was a timber rattler, likely female, and had just shed which would explain why he was outstretched in the sun and had such vibrant colors. I just have to hope she isn't pregnant! She was in the dead middle of the area I spend ample amounts of time in. There's enough cottonmouths out there already. Don't need rattlers to worry about. I guess it's their domain more so than it is mine though...
