unidentified snake!!! need an ID (no picture)
    #14870986 -

i was in Pisgah not too long ago and saw what might be the strangest snake i've ever seen in NC. it was about as big around as the average man's arm, sunning itself and stretched all the way out about 4ft from nose to rattle. Here's the strange part. It had yellow bands on a black body with the bands stopping just short of being full wrap-around bands. Black belly, DEFINITELY had a rattle of about an inch long, brown in color. I know these woods and so does my grandpa and he's never seen anything matching my description in 88 years of living on the edge of Pisgah. It's not a copperhead, mocassin, eastern diamondback, or northern water snake. I've seen plenty of them and they're suppoedly the only species of snakes in northwestern NC. Any EDUCATED guesses are greatly appreciated.

no it definitely had the anatomical structure of a pit viper. and the yellow bands go all the way down the length of the snake. closest thing i've seen is called a krait and the banded patern is identical but kraits don't have rattles and i don't know if they're venomous or not.

There's only one species of snake that has a rattle, obviously a rattle snake. But there are several sub species of rattle snake. And there are mutant sub species that have different colors and markings than the norm. But if it had a rattle "For sure"  It had to be some kind of rattle snake. And indica that kind of shit really has run it's course on this site, It's just plain immature and really fucking stupid!!

Give this a try

Keep in mind that many snakes shake their tale on the ground to synthesize a rattle, be sure that you absolutely saw a rattle.

Also relax, Indica was only making a simple joke, I thought it was kinda funny.

it's a rattler for sure, but if it's a mutation it's a really abnormal one. i've just never seen anything like it. not a bull snake, although the yellow banded wolf snake is somewhat close in pattern. and it absolutely had a rattle. it was sitting still and the tail wasnt moving at all so i got a really good look at this guy. i was no more than 3 meters away. i've considered that it could have been a mimic but the rattle was so pronounced. plus the krait isnt native to the americas.

that's close but the bands were thicker. i thought they were constrictors.

the bands can vary, some dont have bands but are more speckled, some have
very distinct bands, some are almost all black and as has been stated, a lot
of snakes mimic a rattler

as a naturalist i WANT to say it was a king, but im not so sure. im telling you, it had a rattle. i didn't hear it, i saw it. look up the krait and imagine that pattern on a diamondback and that's what i saw. spade shaped head, eliptical shaped eyes (not round at least)

krait marking variations

even the hognose snake I mentioned, one which can flatten it's ribs ad appear
cobra like can appear to be something it's not, including the tail twitch.
not a poisonous snake but can fool most and the markings can vary
