A guitarists quest for a solid distortion tone.
    #14890435 -

To me, tone is part of what represents a guitarist's musical identity. However, achieving a good original rock or metal tone is a difficult and potentially expensive endeavor. What solutions do my fellow guitar player have out there. I got a line 6 pocket pod for 129 and it has some pretty cool effects. I recorded this song with it: Battle of Los Angeles

Hey thank for all of your great insights. That helps me a lot, especially your advice about the midrange. I agree that digital is the way to go for recording. I am still exploring the tip of the iceberg with my pod right now tho. However, my live tone is suffering. I've been playing a Marshall solid state combo live but it's mediocre for the loud hard rock I do. I actually blew it out so now I'm back to square one. I never even turned it up much further than half way but I guess all the distortion did something to it. It works and sounds fine but then all of a sudden the volume will completely drop out while I'm playing. I guess that means it's blown out. everyone tells me I need to buy a tube amp but I just don't want to drop the big bucks right now. However, I really want to play live. Do you think I could achieve an adequate live sound by running my pod through a PA? Some say it works fine but idk. If you would like to hear my song maybe this link will work for you: Battle of Los Angeles on Facebook

My advice is to ditch the pocket pod and upgrade to a POD HD500. I've been rockin on one for a couple months and hooooooly shit do I love it. As far as recording OR playing live (Hooking directly in to PA system) it's the most bang for your buck without making you declare bankruptcy.

The processor used in it vs the pocket pod makes worlds of difference. Plus with the HD500 you can run 2 amps at the same time so there are all sorts of tones you can make. I have yet to try and recreate a tone from a song and fail with it.

Heres a little intro video for it (or rather the hd series as a whole)

Dude, interesting video and information, thanks. It's so cool to see how they do it and what goes into the making of all these line6 tones

No problem.

And should you ever decide to get an HD500 I've got plenty of patches I could give ya to get ya started, or could make one per your request. Naturally you'll want to do it all on your own but trust me there's soooo much to tamper with on it that it can be overwhelming at first. I learned best by analyzing/tweaking other people's tones that they uploaded to customtone.com.

Happy rockin

maybe digital recording equip is best (I might not be reading the above responses correctly being that Im baked) but I would suggest finding yourself a used marshall jcm 800/900 head and work from there. (Fender blues jr. and laney heads are also good cheaper non solid state heads)

here is the image for one of my personal fav. set ups (christian savill of Slowdive), more info can be found at guitargeeks.com

I'm certainly not the leading expert, but I have been playing for over 20 years, and here's my input; wether live or in the studio, stereo sound annhialates mono. Something as simple as changing the eq from the left to the right can really open up the sound of a guitar. If you are recording rythem tracks in the studio and want a super-fat sound, try an acoustic guitar and add the distortion/ other effects in the mix-down. All of the natural harmonics of an acoustic just makes a "WALL" of tone. Of course, that doesn't work well live, unless you want to run everyone out of the building with the squeeling:lol:

so, when you are playing through your amp, and the sound,"drops-out" you can still hear it a little bit? If so, the most likely cause is a cood solder joint where the 1/4 inch input jack attaches to the circuit board. Open it up and look there and see if you ca see where it is seperated, or touch each pin with a soldering iron. It's a common problem. If there is no sound whatsoever, I'd look at the speaker itself. Is it a marshall brand driver? Did you buy it new? a lot of times, a speaker gets damaged, and someone replaces it with a car/house speaker and they are not designed to take the abuse an electric guitar gives them, and they get a cracked voice-coil. Hook up a different speaker and see if that fixes it:shrug:

I have a jcm 800 head.  I love it to death.  From AC/DC to Green Day, it's got that one amazing tone.  1981 100 watts.  It's the best sounding 800 I have ever heard.  And that's an interesting point.  With tube amps, especially older ones there's good sounding ones and better sounding ones.  But you'll have to pry that head from my cold dead hands.

The cons though....
Thing is heavy.  Yeah, just the head weighs more than some people's whole amp.  then I have to hook it up to a cabinet, 4X12, it's huge.  And then there's the problem of volume.  I have never played a show where I could open up the 800 to it's full singing capacity.  Thing is LOUD!  I mean with modern sound capabilities they just put a mic in front of it, and it gets mixed into the rest of the band's sound through the mains.  Even at outdoor concerts with thousands and thousands of people it's too loud.

But oh man.  Take a Gibson Les Paul, plug it straight in.  Set the volume at pre: 10,  volume: 5-7
That is tone right there!!

plus taking care of the tubes is a con, but yeah it's a great choice to start building a tone from.

Also I'm not much of a fan of too much digital effects or mastering tricks, I like shit to sound as if I'm standing in the room as its recorded. keep it raw.
