Guitar, recording clean and adding distortion digitally?

I was thinking, since I dont have a very good amp with nice distortion or anything, wouldn't it make sense for me to record clean, and add reverb and distortion digitally on the computer? I was thinking that all those pedals and such would all be digital anyways, so it seems like it would make sense and work. I tried playing around with some free vst plugins but couldnt get a nice tone.

Is this reccomended or not?

And does anyone have reccomendations for a nice free vst amp? Im having some trouble finding a versatile distortion simulator, though I have found a plug in for just about everything else.

hmm.. it's hard to find good digital distortions, especially free ones.
sorry, I can't recommend any (cuz I don't know of any) free ones, but Amplitube is good, and I often record through my Boss Overdrive pedal, which has the smoothest tone.. i love it.

Yeah I doubt you'll be able to do it free but Amplitube is incredible software and if you want to drop the 400 dollars for it you will have more sound at your fingertips than you ever thought possible, for WAY WAY WAY cheaper than the hardware required to get that high quality of sound.
