all just theories though. Drawing conclusions from experiments is dangerous, especially with a theory in mind ( though it's perfectly human to do so, and seems obvious to do so ).

There may not even be dark matter because the theory relies on estimates based on what we've seen

You can think of dark matter as theoretical in properties, but nonetheless the "existance of dark matter" is the only classification. Results from scientists (ie Carnegie Institute), who analyazed hundreds of galaxies, verified conclusively that the velocity of outer stars in a galaxy did not vary much from that of the inner ones. This meant that the outer stars should fly into space, causing the galaxy to disintegrate into billions of individual stars, unless held together by the gravitational pull of invisible dark matter. Contrast lies in our own solar system as it's impossible to provide the same principles using known matter in our solar system to that of other galaxies, and would provide a unstable result previously mentioned. Records shows that 90 percent dark matter exists holding some galaxies together. You cannot say that dark matter itself is a a theory as the term dark matter is one classification for all varieties of such matter and thus accounts for our margin of error only characterized by weight via Newton's laws (provided a inevitable binary star systems within the galaxy used to average star weight and then multiplied by the number of stars). Without "dark matter," you couldn't explain certain phenomena as the Coma cluster of galaxies requiring 20 times the mass of the luminous stars seen to remain stable at the rapidly rotating cluster. Considering the possibility of dark matter to be non existant would require ignorance of studies and concluding a absurdly remote distortion of what our telescopes are recording - though I'd accept any supported known matter which holds incredible mass and releasing insignificant or no radiation.

well yes, but the main point is similar as that of the article's - all that is right IF ( notice that the if is big? ) all underlying concepts and theories are 100% correct as they are used. Those scientists decided that they had NO clue what was going on, as the missing pull was outside of what they could possibly observe or interact with, and so attributed the missing gravitational pull to some "dark matter."

Their observations were interpreted through a scratched and dusty metaphorical lens of current theory. They did the best they could with it, but eventually a cleaner lens will come through and many things will change.

Just as I see it; dark matter is an unproven and risky theory, nothing more and nothing less.

I agree with infinite time/space,
could light speed be distorted with gravity, particles, refections and any other influences along it's path, that it would be hard to estimate the speed that the universe is expanding, if we don't know all the compensations that would need to factered in to predict the actual origin of the light path and colours. Does light speed up and/or slow down over it's course.

I can't imagine that time or space can suddenly start from a fixed point in time, and just end at some point. Time is something that happens no matter what, and what is beyond the end of space? Empty?

it's good to keep an open view on all theories, the answers are out there somewhere :-)

BleaK said:
the big bang theory has never held any water.

the universe was 1 point that is now expanding? what surounds the universe then? where are the borders of expansion? whats outside the borders? MORE UNIVERSE.

infinity.

WHat surrounds the universe, nothing, and I meen literally nothing, but you can never find the edge of the universe because it infinitely expands.  Therea re no borders.  (This is a very wierd concept which takes more than a slight interest to understand).  Outside the borders, nothing.
