It makes sense to hire thugs to patrol areas that are chaotic from gang violence and such. It doesn't make sense at all in the absence of gang violence, but we have it all over the country anyway. It's an enormous waste of money and it makes our streets more dangerous for everybody.

Yup, gang violence would most likely be drastically reduced with the end of prohibition on consensual crimes.

That too.

The people who actually understand what's going on in the streets have been systematically excluded from the democratic process. They are people who use non-doctor-prescribed drugs and get killed by police beatings for committing petty crimes.

This country is massively fucked.

You ever wonder what would happen if the gangs took there organizations, joined together and tried for positive change? They could be an unstoppable force.

Gangs do work for positive change.  They just have a different idea of what positive change is than you.

Did someone in here really just try to say that the Police Force was unconstitutional?

Its idiocy like that which ruins our cause.  The people need a voice, but it can not be a voice of ignorance.  Now, I havent read the constituion all the way through.  The police may very well be unconstitutional.  But I think someone would've noticed & said something by now...

The police is definitely unconstitutional, but they've scared us into believing we need them.

The correct solution would be just to expand the sheriff's department, which is DIFFERENT from the police. Sheriffs are locally elected to enforce the law and hire deputies, but the police departments are nothing but taxpayer-funded gangs with pretty uniforms and expensive equipment. They aren't accountable to the citizenship they supposedly protect, which is why this bullshit keeps happening and getting worse.

Don't call me an idiot for pointing out what everybody else is too scared to think about. :crankey:

Doesn't the Sheriff run the police department?

Edit:  nevermind taht's the Chief of Police.

So.  does each city have a Sheriff and a Police Chief?

educate me.  find me something that says its unconstitutional.  or find methe part of the constituion that is relevant.  until then, i think you're bluffing.

The constitution doesn't say anything about police departments, and this country's laws were solely executed by sheriffs until the nineteenth century.

The chief of police is appointed by an impregnable executive bureaucracy. You can't fire a shitty chief of police by voting for his opponent, and executives often aren't held accountable for the messes made by their employees.

You only have my word that the police department is unconstitutional, but I think if you do the reading on the constitution and the history of the police force in this country you'll see that I'm right.

Comon man, that is super lame.  You claimed its unconstitutional - cite what part of the constitution it violates or take back your claim.

You're asking me to prove a negative. Police departments aren't constitutionally defined or protected. How can I cite the part of the constitution that doesn't protect police departments?

At any rate, getting rid of the police will be impossible unless the police start beating up old or middle aged, middle class white people.

So the police are not unconstitutional then.  You don't understand how the constitution works.

Reiss Jr, Albert J. (1992). "Police Organization in the Twentieth Century". Crime and Justice 51.

Paraphrased by Wikipedia:

Quote:
The first local modern police department established in the United States was the Boston Police Department in 1838, followed by the New York City Police Department in 1845. Early on, police were not respected by the community, as corruption was rampant.

I understand what he's getting at, police are not in the constitution therefore they are not protected. They need to be mentioned explicitly for it to be unconstitutional though.

So the police are not unconstitutional then.  You don't understand how the constitution works.

So maybe I won't call them unconstitutional anymore. I certainly will continue to call them undemocratic and illegitimate, however.

Yea.  If Police are unconstitutional, then so is 90% of our government's functions.

educate yourself, Tchan.  there are two views of constitutionalism:
-Peopel who say "the government can only do what the constituion SAYS IT CAN"
-People who say "the constitution can do anything, except if the constitution says IT CAN'T"
