Surgery cancelled due to flood.... goddamnit
    #14844127 -

Yesterday I quit my job, and moved all my stuff back to my parents place.  I had surgery lined up for today, 2 hours away from home.

I woke up at 6:30 in the morning, drove 2 hours, went through all the screenings, waiting, etc.  They stuck me with an IV around 9:30.  I see the anesthesiologist, the head anesthesiology student, a fellow, another doctor, and finally the surgeon.  He tells me it's gonna be 2 minutes.

Everything was going so smoothly, and were right on time, so I was surprised when 45 minutes later, they still hadn't come to get me.  Another 30 minutes later, someone comes to tell me the day has been cancelled.

The hospital had fucking FLOODED from rain.  There was CRAZY amounts of water inside the hospital - it's mindblowing how that much water could have gotten in.  You'd think it would have been designed/up kept a little better for a hospital.

Now after quitting my job, and moving from a place where I'm still paying rent for another month, I might not even have the surgery for another month or two because they're booked :feelsbadman:.

Fucking bad day man.

Perhaps there will be a cancellation you could take advantage of.

I'm sure that they have a procedure for allocating such things, but it couldn't hurt to explain your situation to your Dr., the nurses working in his charge, and even receptionists. Call them often and be incredibly polite, just making certain that they have you in mind should something open up and they need to decide who gets it.

Sorry and good luck.

Yeah I'm gonna call right when the office opens on Tuesday and try to see if there's an opening - I'll make sure to call right away because I'm not going to be the only one rescheduling.  Literally had the flood happened 20 minutes later I would have been under and the surgeon would have been cutting into me, and would have had to finish.  Goddamn.

That is a strange turn of event. That was very unlucky. Best of luck with your surgery

Maybe something good will come of it!

No one is more against the idea of 'fate' or 'things meant to be' than I, but something might happen to make you glad for this turn of events.

Any reason to keep your eyes open for opportunity is a good one.

Socialized health care is great, unless you like the threat of catastrophe looming over you.

I agree - from the time I decided I needed surgery to the time I got it booked was like 5 weeks.  That's really not bad.  Of course now they might be booked up and it could be a month or two, but overall it's awesome

My experiences with socialized health care have also been great.

The dread of living without health insurance those months when I couldn't afford it was not.
