Pretty Old Gingko Tree
    #14837925 -

My buddy sent me a photo of this Gingko growing in an area just north of NYC.  I've seen trees planted in areas of Brooklyn and the city, but never this thick.  How old do you think this guy is?

I can't make a comment on age. But I know there are two good sized Ginko trees (one male one female) on UVMs campus which is less than 40 miles from the Canadian border.

I know there's one on my campus, but it's about 1/2-2/3 of the diameter of this one.

Yeah they can get incredibly thick. Gingko is one of the oldest trees on earth. The species goes back millions of years with specimens that are about 1000 years old. This is a baby in comparison but still older than any I've seen.

Banyan is another tree that gets incredibly old. I saw one in Miami at the outdoor mall right near Bicentennial Park that was absolutely enormous. It has to be a few hundred years old. There's a little plaque on it that says the name of the tree too.  I wish I had taken a picture but I don;t think I had a camera at the time.

Maybe 50-70 years old, hard to tell. There's one down in here in a botanic gardens, it's just over 150 years old and it has aerial roots on the trunk and some lower branches as well. That ones not young though, cool tree.

Ginkgo is my all time favourite tree. They grow quite slowly though. I love seeing the trees at the RBG.
