Me and my girlfriend made a pipe together...

She made the stem, I made the bowl. It's apple wood with lichens around the rim (still growing), and padauk. The accent on the stem is mussel shell. Let us know what you think!

But yes, OP, totally awesome looking.

I bet theres some kind of sealant you could put over the lichens to preserve them and have the pipe be usable.

Lichens don't do well under any sort of finish, the best way to preserve them is to leave them be, they keep their shape and colour for a really long time...

You could probably encase them in a clear epoxy, but the epoxy would turn brown with the heat really fast, and probably much worse for your health if you inhaled any vapors...

And, if you're careful lighting the bowl, there is no need to worry about burning them. But, lets say you did inhale some vapor from heating the lichens...

now..some lichens are toxic, but the bark on this pipe doesn't have any known toxic lichen growing on it, as far as I can tell.

Some lichens produce spores, others flake off and disperse themselves in the air... If you've ever been near an apple tree, then you've probably inhaled these same species...

Many lichens are edible as well. They are mostly made up of carbs.

Now, take into account that you are using a pipe to actually smoke plant material (which IMO is much more of a health hazard), and worrying about some lichens sort of seems silly.

Also, wood with lichens all over it have been used in camp/home fires for years. If there were some known dangers, you'd think that there would be some information somewhere about it...

If anyone has any solid information about the dangers of burning lichens, that'd be awesome!
