RIP 8 year old Powerbook

Yesterday I started having problems with my almost 8 year old 12" Powerbook g4 1ghz that I basically used as a netbook.

It started booting up with the screen blank, sometimes it would reach to the logon password screen and then lock up and sometimes I'd be able to use it and it would FREEZE without warning.

I have no idea what to do. I originally bought it for College back in September 2003 and has worked near flawlessly since then. A hell of a lot better than everyone I know that bought Dell and HP laptops that lasted 3 years at the most.

I don't know what to do. I'm used to fixing my own electronics, but this is baffling and sad. The thing has been around since I was 19, It almost feels like I've lost a small part of my family.

And what's worst is that I don't have the money to replace it right now. I guess if I can't fix it, my Birthday is coming up at the end of the month and I've been sober for almost 4 1/2 months. Maybe my parents will treat me to a new one.

Still, to form an emotional attachment to something that's worked flawlessly for 8 years, it's kinda sad. I loved that laptop, even though it was slow as balls by todays standards. It was the first major purchase I ever made and the most reliable computer I've ever owned.

Well you can ask an apple store to fix it for you. :shrug:

Overheating? Rip it apart and blow all the dust out.

Reinstall the OS. New hard drive, maybe a RAM problem? That would be my guesses.


Wild stabs here really. I like my desktops for there easy fixabilaty.

Find a local shop that works with Mac's, they'll tell you to upgrade but parts for those things are a dime a dozen now. Should be able to fix if needed

That's the thing. I can fix it myself. I just don't know why it's doing what it's doing.

Hell, when I used to use amphetamines back in the day, I must have taken the thing apart 4-5 times.

It's strange that I've owned a Mac for 8 years, but I have the slightest idea on how to restore it.

If it's a hard drive problem, that's easy, plus my birthday is coming up so it won't cost me a dime.

I was looking on ebay for powerbooks and those motherfuckers are still selling for between 200-400 bucks.

It's weird though. Sometimes it will boot up just fine, but most of the time it won't even start up the boot process. I really hope it's just the hard drive, that's an easy fix.

Sounds like the hard drive is bad, did it start making a "clicking" noise recently? If so, just get another hard drive and you should be good to go.

No clicking noise. Yesterday I got it to boot up a few times and when I was entering my password it froze, A few times I got all the way through and was able to use the web browser and AIM for quite a while, but I closed the lid to put it sleep mode and it never recovered.

Now when I hit the power button about half the time I can hear the hard drive spin up (normal sounds), but the screen stays BLACK.

Like I said before, if it's the hard drive, that's easy and cheap. I just hope it's not something more than that.

I miss my Powerbook. I've basically been using it as a netbook for the past few years since its so small and light, but as soon as it started fucking up I felt like a pet was sick. I've had this thing since I was 18. I'm so emotionally attached to it, it's probably a bit unhealthy.

People talk shit about Macs, but have you ever met someone with a PC laptop that has had 8 years of completely solid uninterrupted service?  I sure haven't.

All my friends bought HP's or Dells and within 2-3 years they were buying a new one.

I might have spent a bit of cash on mine in 03, $1300. but I got a free $300 Ipod and a free $100 printer with it.

Macs don't break within the first 2 years like most other brands but your has lasted a whopping 8 years that is ridiculous

The reason I thought it was the hard drive is because my laptop started doing the same exact thing about a year ago so I called hp and explained what was going on... They said it was the hard drive and sent me a new one since my 1 year warranty was still active. (I only had the laptop for a little over 6 months at the time)

Only difference was mine was making a "clicking" noise which was a dead giveaway that the hard drive was faulty.

Call Mac's tech support and see what they have to say about it. :shrug: but everything you said sounds so familiar minus the "clicking" noise.

I have an ancient laptop that only needs a hard drive. The problem is, I don't want to waste money on it since it is so old and slow. I think it is... fuck I forget, it is a toshiba but it is the equivalent to a p2 300mhz or something. Yeah it's old it's just dead slow. Works great I just have weird partition to avoid the bad sectors.

Macs have there place. I like my PC's, what ever.

Hard drives don't always click when they die. The clicking is just the reader arm thingys crashing into the platers or some shit.

Find a place that will do a free diagnostic. then get the report and fix your self.

I can get a 320gb hd for $112 through www.ifixit.com (they've saved my ass before, I'll give them my business), but I really need to know if it's the HD that's causing the problem.

I know it's not the best place to ask on a mushroom website, but I value your responses more than most any other forum I've been to.

I'm going to post in the Apple forums too, see what the techs have to say.

I'd call the tech support, but it will cost me $$.

I'm just going to post on their tech boards and see what the response is. There are lots of apple techs on there.
