Soulseek is your friend. :fonz: Google it, it's a relatively small P2P program but fucking EFFECTIVE, I've found rare as fuck obscure bands/albums on it, and the speed is top-notch.

Google it!

For some reason double posting isn't as taboo here as it is on the rest of the internet.

Laid back i guess.

Labels are just applied to give a general idea of what the music is about... metal is extremely diverse. It is home to some of the absolute best and absolute worse music ever created.

I mean, some of the metal sub genres are very cheesy but it's just a simple way to quickly tell the world what you're about. Music is hard enough to describe with language alone even when writing/describing it in detail and using paragraphs... when you have 3 seconds of someones attention span to tell them what you're about simply saying "metal" does not cut in in most cases.

Metal genres still get kind of ridiculous.

Are doom and drone separate? Is one a sub-sub-genre of another? Black Sabbath is usually cited as the originator of doom, but bands like Black Sabbath and Candlemass don't sound much like Sun O))) or Boris. Earth is pretty different from The Sword, but they're both doom bands to most people.

I'm sure this is the case for most of the genres, I'm just not familiar with much metal beyond doom/drone/post-metal kind of stuff.

Generalizing music you probably didn't take that much time to listen to. I'm sure most of this is preconceived notions.

Metal can be beautifully textured, emotional, powerful music. It's an interesting perspective in the world of music. I love metal dearly, though it's not enough to constitute the main part of my musical diet

It's just another persons strange, wailing perception of the world, which everyone is entitled to, distilled to sound, and your unwarranted judgments and prejudices are misplaced imo

Fucken A. I hate when you say oh ya, they are black metal and they get all fuckin "NO!!!!!! That is NOT LACK METAL!". Oh sorry, pretty close though eh? I hate all the genras of metal. I like what i like i don't what I dont.

Sadly I was never a fan of Doom.

But, some of those long ass songs could be good for.... well ya know, long trips.
Here is my favorite to be placed in the right spot.
(meh you can't here it here)

(I suggest listening to the whole, not just a segment, album that is)

I am gonna go now. I think I need to drink more and maybe get a hit of some bud(might not have a test). Then it is sexy time. Or I will be back all frustrated and crazy. :paranoid:

Or I will be wondering around

I actually listen to metal and rock all the time, that doesn't make the fact that every other band  seems needs it's own subgenre these days. I was only poking fun at that. You take yourself too seriously, it's music not the holocaust...

I dunno dude, you were being hyper critical from the looks of it, just defending what I think is decent music

The post I quoted had almost no mention of the silly sub genres, which I agree are a waste of time

Just another futile attempt at putting everything in a manageable, comfortable little box

Have you listened to Swallow the Sun? They have one that's close to an hour I think called Plague of Butterflies.

Edit: Ok so it's ONLY 34 minutes.

:loldongs:

Fucking 8 years, THEY WERE LEFT TO THEIR OWN DEVICES FOR ALMOST A DECADE

and that watered down crap is the best they could come up with?

:drgonz::picard:

@propensity/blujay: I agree the constant categorization of the genres gets tedious and redundant and more retarded are the disputes that arise from it (THEY'RE SUICIDAL DEPRESSIVE BLACK METAL NOT ATMOSPHERIC BLACK METAL NO WTF DUDE THEY'RE RAW BM NAWWWW THEYRE NSBM GET @ ME) but it's still a good way to get a general idea of their sound.

Much of my teenage years was spent glued to metal-archives.com and snagging thousands upon thousands of obscure black metal bands so after a while I really stopped giving a fuck about genre distinctions and nowadays just focus on/listen to whatever sounds innovative to me.

It sucks having to go through 25 different bands and they're all fucking Darkthrone clones before I can find that one band that does it for me :doublefacepalm:

Y'know for some reason Swallow The Sun never appealed to me. But this song may have just redeemed them in my eyes, thank you. :super:

Have the lot of you dudes ever heard of this doom band called Esoteric from the UK? One of the most psychedelic sounding, ethereal and still crushingly heavy bands I've heard. I'm not too huge into them but I came across their Maniacal Vale album and this song did it for me:

Esoteric - Circle

Yeah actually, doom metal and drone doom metal are extremely different. Drone is, as you said, bands like Sunn O))), Khanate, etc. Even Earth to an extent can be considered drone in their older days (pre-Hibernaculum, before they started implementing the acoustic western element to their droning). Black Sabbath is "proto-doom" (essentially, doom before there was even doom. I'm guessing from their mid-paced riffs and dark atmosphere?) Drone is characterized by, well, extensive droning and heavy use of feedback as a part of the composition.

I've never checked out The Sword before, but I always hear them mentioned in conjunction with Baroness.

Interesting, I've never known someone whose predominate exposure to metal laid in doom metal territory. Do you prefer a specific subgenre of it or any doom? (yes, here we go with the genre categorization ) I'm drawn more towards funeral doom (Thergothon, Shape of Despair, Skepticism, etc.), the black metal/doom metal mixtures (Nortt, Abyssmal Sorrow) and death/doom (diSEMBOWELMENT - all-time favorite doom band, Autopsy, Dusk, etc.) and others like Asunder and Corrupted.

Best doom show I've been to (and sadly the only one) was Shrinebuilder, Salome, and Wolves In The Throne Room (not doom). Rest assured the instant the first chord was played weed was smelled from every corner of the audience
