1 hour Doom Metal Epics
    #14731703 -

Bear with me for a second. Or an hour.

Or two. :smirk:

Yes, tracks of this length do indeed exist.

For most of you 15 minutes or so is a stretch (even 10!) but I absolutely adore lengthy songs. It really gives the artist plenty of time to fully express themselves and are good companions for long rides/lengthy tripping. Most long songs lie in the realm of black metal but most especially doom metal.

What I enjoy about them is that they are some of the most image-evoking, thought provoking and well composed pieces (but not without some very headbangable moments). For doom metal epics, the riffs are pretty heavy and mid-paced but ALWAYS they thrown in some beautiful, dreamy ambient or acoustic passages to balance things out and keep it flowing.

Here are a few tracks I have found over the years that are monumental, monolithic, gargantuan, mastodonic, crushing, majestic, epic works of art. 85% of you most likely won't have the time or patience for them but for those few of you who do and appreciate this style of music, you are in for a HUGE (literally) treat.

Monolithe - Monolithe II

Quote:
Lyrics

As it grows through the ages, subconsciously playing against itself until the scale has balanced to the back of the wrong side, it slowly leaves its small cage for a bigger one. Everything was so planned. Step by step the sewage of its omnipresence streams a rigid natural order to a swirling chaos. This friendly evening light is no more. The contaminated cradle has been left further behind. Spectrums of time are filled with this sick presence as the bounds of space are now violently forced. Fleeing from its own destruction through this endless darkness it leads The Core to a predictable perdition. Until The Plan spreads its web around the regathered four dimensions. It was a wrong choice if there was any other. Observation and guidance for and from aeons, where a single quark’s journey didn’t yet get to an end. Over the threshold of the Monolith. Where knowledge equals ignorance. Where everything once belonged. Where time is forever. Where even nothingness has no shape. Existence could have another meaning now. It would anyway all end the same. The edges are close, mouth open to swallow it all. A sole drapery seeds the desolate fields of the bounds. Floating weak on the alien rock. No possible focus. Standing, beautiful in a morning sun, it was the meaning of everything. The road of the neo-exodus has been sculpted there in stone of dark colours by foreign hands.

Monolithe - Monolithe I

Quote:
Lyrics

The wider is connected to the smaller. All is one and one is all. Maelström of connecting elements embracing absolute nothingness. Melting into useless strapes. Moving to nowhere. With purposeless destination. Through time and space. In brotherhood with an abstract presence in a sphere of absurd vacuum. It has always been a deep black hole without meaning for the ones who were once put there, trying to find an aim to all this. In presence of an alien reflection they progressed. Unconscious of a cosmic plan distant from uncountable centuries away. And the time had come... There was just nothing and then it was there... Then darkness disappeared. Far from the random shapes of nature, beyond the bounded knowledge of men. Shining in a morning sun, it was standing, beautiful. An artefact raised at the horizon of Earth, a sense and a purpose to the being. From beyond the infinite and further, a non understandable communication. Messenger of what was once, still is, and will ever be. Past and future at the lowest point of the scale. A sign of the watchers, kindly looking to their herds... Waiting to be reached... A clue from above. A mean of colonisation through the aeons, self confident intelligent species used like flock raised to thoughts and civilization. For an unreachable and inexorable goal. Nothing was random. A beast known as mankind. Evolution through centuries... A monolith as message... For the sake of what?

Monolithe is a funeral doom band from France, their albums attempt to explore the origin of mankind. Their 2 albums are both comprised of 1 song, each 51 minutes in length. I personally enjoy the 2nd moreso than the first and found myself playing both albums over and over and over again as I just recently rediscovered them. 27 minutes into Monolithe II and it was already cemented in my mind this is godlike. These songs just aren't fair to other bands who've attempted something like this.

Corrupted - El Mundo Frio

Corrupted - Sangre/Humanos

Corrupted are masters at minimalism and progression (the guitars in Sangre/Humano don't begin until the 17th minute!). The tracks above both take their time building up but rest assured it IS worth the wait. Ecstasy does take its time. They are a sludge/doom band from Japan though they sing predominately in Spanish. They are notable for releasing various splits with death metal/grindcore bands and making some typical 8 minute or so sludge tracks, but when it comes down to their full-lengths they DO NOT FUCK AROUND.

Their album compositions are lengthy and fucking worth it. Very noir, ambient, melancholy and dreamy passages of acoustic tranquility mesh with the supreme heaviness of the guitars.

I don't expect any replies for the next few hours.

Go forth, ye brave enough (or patient enough), and allow your soul to be simultaneously crushed and caressed by waves of bliss :brucelee: They demand your complete attention and patience.

Longer is not necessarily better. Life time black metal/doom metal fan here.

I generally respect artists who can pack ridiculous amounts of content in less time. A song that is 5 minutes but feels like a timeless journey is much better than an hour long composition that treads along in mediocrity for an hour for the sake of being long.

Seriously, this is bullshit man.

I never said longer equates to better. However I feel that these are some songs that actually succeed despite their insane lengths.

If Deathspell Omega made an hour-long track, well. That'd be a completely different story

and would be unparalleled. :homerdrool:

Agalloch are fucking excellent, especially their album "Ashes Against The Grain". Which album is that song you posted off of? It's pretty sweet.

Holy fuck I'd completely forgotten about this band. Fucking thank you

Folk + Black Metal + Post Rock = Agalloch

Here's one that is "torture doom". This is the epitomy of "brutal, gutwrenching" and pretty fucking disturbing, at 32 minutes long.

Alright, I found the album. "Marrows of the Spirit"; going to download that, and re-download Ashes Against The Grain and throw them on during my next trip. :awesome:

Song from the same album I just found that's just as excellent:

Sleep's Dope Smoker is an hour long song. I haven't heard the whole thing, it's broken up into segments on youtube.

(Because everything posted prior was a homogeneous garbled vomit of ear-wrenchingly bland guitar solos and unintelligible mad-at-the-poo-poo-world guttural blathering and perfect examples of how not to play a single track for 10+ minutes)

Hai guess what guise all our songs sound practically similar because we have no actual artistic talent... Let's just mash them all into a terrible conglomeration! Perfect yeah; rah rah. WALL OF DEAAAAATH

Almost forgot about Sleep. That song's a classic, but I'm not too keen on stoner doom.

Good thread imo, thanks for the music suggestions. I have always enjoyed lengthy songs, I have never found any in the form of doom metal though
Definitely not doom metal or black metal, but I feel Acid Mothers Temple deserves a mention. Their songs are super spacey, and super long

Also if you are into noise music merzbow has plenty of voyage length songs :crazy2:

Acid Mother's Temple is some excellent psychedelic stuff. :awecid: Those crazy japs.

If you're familiar with Merzbow and AMT then I gotta ask if you have ever heard of the band Boris from Japan? I would classify them as... well, being all over the board. They've dabbled in doom, sludge, drone, post-rock, j-rockish stuff, etc. Hell their first album Absolutego is an hour long feedback-laden drone/doom epic, I almost forgot about it!

Yea I have heard of Boris, but have never really listened to them. I am going to spend the rest of the night sipping tea, blaze'n and listening to a few epic hr long doom songs, and then Absolutego. :stoned:
Thanks for the boris suggestion!
On a slightly related note. The crazy ass japanese noise band that is The Gerogerigegege, has a pretty long song of them just going crazy. I dont particularly like this song, but I find it quite funny and have listened to the whole thing like twice.
