Homeless People With Signs

That always makes me depressed.  But apparently the sympathy factor draws them more money than Home Depot employs make in a day.  That was the place this woman keeps standing in front of.  She's had the same fucking sign for a while now.

I don't feel bad for them. They WANT to be homeless. They're happy that way. They don't have to follow societal norms, go to a job every day, pay rent, etc. I spoke with a homeless fellow one day and it was almost enlightening. I wouldn't ever want to do it, unless I had a car to sleep in, a gym membership for showers (or a beach with out door showers), and lived in california. That is if I didn't care about going to college.

There was a story in the paper here awhile back about a lady in Toronto who spent her days panhandling, then went home to a pretty nice house, car, etc. Apparently you can make some damn good money doing it in the right circumstances. :nonono:

I've seen this documented. Heroin addicts in New York City. An episode of intervention (the junkie girl completely tricks this one girl who's around her age and gets money and a hug from her). The documentary Union Square by Steven J. Szaklarsky documents seven homeless heroin addicts who are able to effectively feed ~40 dollar a day habits by simply sitting on the street.

this is not true of all homeless folks
people who have the means to be not homeless but want to be homeless to look cool or feel superior are what we call hipster homeless (this doesnt apply to people who could get a job and a place but are homeless cause theyre traveling)

but come to new york city and the vast majority of the homeless here are not those
they are genuinely disadvantaged people and trust me they are not happy

I'm kind of tempted to do it for a while and save up money (I'm young, clean cut, and live a short distance from New York City). A few days ago when I was in the city, I asked soemone for a dollar and he gave it to me -- the first person I asked!

Jobs don't exist to give people money. One cannot simply go out and get a job. But a person still needs money, right...?

I feel it's a pretty dick move for anyone to start asking for money.  Hell, they're smart enough to make a sign so depressing that you want to give them money.  But, it's kind of like them being a sociopath.  They get so much money from people.  I actually want to go to this person and give her 20 bucks to clean my car.  I believe you need to earn money.  I'm just not going to hand you 20 dollars.

There's only so many ways to earn money. The population is growing. There's only so many houses and apartments available. Having a home and an income is an unsustainable system.

Yea I saw a show on msnbc all on panhandling or begging or whatnot...

They went to a bunch of beggars and offered money/food for work in return...nothing crazy just yard work and stuff....only one of the people they asked showed up...they tracked down the others some who had cars,lived in apts down the street,few were like..."why should I have to work?this is America..."

Was a pretty good show

Wow. A lot of people on the shroomery think the same way as I do in regards to money. I think we need to take on a more socialist way of living where everyone is taken care of. Money is bullshit and creates more problems than it helps. Money is just an ego reward.

Or a vehicle or a camp site. Like I said, the population is growing. People are going to have to come up with less conventional ways to live.
