I think I'm gonna go straight for the whitewater, I know that's what I wanna do - high-speed adrenaline-rush stuff.

These things are expensive, though... I'm gonna have to save or borrow some money.

I have a feeling it will be worth it :awesomenod:

I love to kayak. You can get a cheap one for like 150 bucks. Better have a vehicle you can carry it with though...or rent one...thatd be the pricey part.

I have done my share of whitewater, and flatwater paddling. AT one time I owned about 8 boats . . .

One boat is not going to serve both purposes really, no decent whitewater boat is good on flatwater due to lack of a straight keel. Yet a straight keeled boat won't turn into eddies fast enough to be of use on whitewater. If you are looking to whitewater, I would buy a larger used boat and then upgrade to a shorter/lower volume playboat later. It is fun as shit to spend hours surfing static river-holes, or spawning upstream - you don't always need to bomb downstream or set damn shuttles. I also recommend taking it to a lake and practicing your roll in shallow water. Coming out of you boat in the middle of rapids is no fun, especially at floodstage or in class 4 and up.

If flatwater is your bag, well there are a ton of options but longer narrower boats will take you farther much more easily than short, wide sit-on-tops. Not that you can't find a sit-on-top that is long/narrow. But in either case I suggest looking for used equipment. Gearing up will cost over a grand if you buy all new: Boat 700-1000, paddle 100-200, skirt 100 . . . Then again in the flatwater realm there are some cheap options, but you get what you pay for.

Also - don't know where you are but ocean wave surfing in a kayak is awesome. I used to do that a lot when I lived on the coast in NC. When it was too shitty to take out a board, I would hop in my Sleek or Enigma and have a fucking blast. All varieties are great excercise as well.

I live in the San Francisco bay area. I found this helpful list of whitewaters in the country and it looks like there's a good few of them up north around Sacramento. (The time that I've gone whitewater kayaking before was in Tennessee, I don't remember the name of the river but it was pretty intense.)

Anyway, I just found a Prijon Hurricane near me on CraigsList for $200.

According to reviews, it's ten feet long and good for narrow-assed individuals (such as myself) so this thing is looking fucking great to me right now. I'm gonna go and check it out tomorrow afternoon.

that looks like a decent starter boat for the money. You'll be itching for a more nimble boat once you get good, but I actually paddled a hurricane long ago, my roomate had one. Good boat; I used it more for ocean surf since I had a low volume squirt boat, and a short creek boat. Something like that though, you learn basic control, how to roll, and it is a little forgiving because the edges are not sharp/narrow, but instead are rounded

Sounds perfect. I won't be only whitewatering since it looks like the whitewaters are pretty far up north, but I live right next to several amazingly idyllic beaches.

trust me when I say, you can rule surf in a kayak. I prefer a board if it is big and clean, but on lesser days a kayak is actually more fun in surf. But if you are strapped in to a cockpit pit, definitely get where uyou can wet-exit and try to roll a few times before getting on water. Being hung upside down and strapped in can cause minor panic.

Oh and PS: you probably know this but just in case, you won't be able to go miles+ in that boat on open water. the rocker and lack of straight keel means distance is hard fought

Tell me about it, man - I got turned over on the rapids and even though I had "mastered" the roll on a placid lake, I ended up just flailing around and grabbing at rocks trying to upright myself (which eventually worked).

Seriously though, that boat is a steal at 200, and is a perfect beginner boat that will still get play even if you end up with a quiver.

ETA: a fucking steal man, if it was here I would buy on principle. BUT - meet and offer 150 heh, pay 175. or 2, hell is worth it unless there is a hole in it

I'm fucking excited. The fact that it's good for whitewatering, surf, and beginnering makes it win-win-win. Thanks for confirming my purchase by the way, this thing sounds amazing.

Now I need to figure out how to get it attached to my car. :strokebeard:

for one boat you can prob use softracks, or buy pipe foam and some flat rip-straps, or good rope if you tie good knots. Two straps through the car windows sideways should hold on boat of this size. If you are paranoid you can hook front and rear too.
