So .. I want to mess around with a kayak on the open ocean soon. It's getting warmer out, I don't have school, and it's been a long time since I've had the kind of freedom a boat affords.

Here's my plan: I'm going to scout out long stretches of oceanfront properties, looking for older, obviously unused kayaks in wealthier people's backyards. (I'll be looking from the public beach, not actually snooping.)

Then I'm going to knock on their front door(s), politely introduce myself, and offer to do yard-work in exchange for kayak time. If that's a no go, I'll offer something like $2.50/hour to rent it. It doesn't sound like much, but I would probably explore the islands around my home extensively; so I might be out for 6-8 hours or more.

I'll leave my bike locked up around their house as collateral, so they know I'll be coming back. (It's a nice bike; it cost me $450 new.) And I'll dress nice, address them as 'sir' or 'ma'am,' and save my pot for the kayak trip.

You think it'll work? Anyone try anything similar? Suggestions, hints, tactics? :strokebeard:

If you're into it, you could always buy a kayak :shrug2:

I'll only be in the country for another month or two. It's a huge investment for a nice kayak, and I can't be sure I'll be able to enjoy it. I don't know if I'll be coming back after my travels.

Why don't you just go to a store that rents kayaks? I've never been to a beach that doesn't have at least a few of those places around.

I can't exchange yard work for kayaks at a store. That's why I'm scouting out the rich neighborhoods: most of the people living there are retired, so if they do have a kayak -- I've seen dozens, most in good condition -- then they're probably not using it.

Renting is plan D :rocket:

I dont think this will work.

Although i lived near an abandoned/private beach a few months ago, and there was a canoe on it, and i took it out all the time, but after i went on a long paddle along the road, someone must have spotted me, because the next time when i went to the beach, it was gone.

I'm sure I'll meet a few of those

But I'm pretty confident I'll find cool people who can sympathize. I think I'm convincing enough when I'm motivated. And we both get something out of it.

I had an awesome day.

The first house I tried, a woman answered, listened to my little spiel, and took down my name and number so she could ask her husband and get back to me. She seemed nice, but I don't think she was willing to make a decision like that without her hubby.

The second house, I got invited in and had a great chat with three guys who rent the place: Mike and Mike, who are both in their mid-twenties, and Phil, who's in his fifties. We all agreed that I'd do a bit of yard work -- clearing a small garden of debris, and chopping a bit of wood -- and they'd drive across town to pick up a kayak for me.

It was easy work, and after twenty minutes, Mike and Mike gave me a smoke and we chucked throwing axes at a tree in their yard. Then Phil got back with the kayak, we spruced it up and I got suited up, and I was off.

It was bad-ass. I followed a small family of sea lions up the coast, riding with the waves. The sea lions would poke their heads up, bark at me, slip into the water again, and re-emerge two feet from my paddles. They played around for awhile, then left.

So I parked my boat in a calm bay against a rock-face, threw on some tunes, and lit up a bowl. I hung out there for a few, ate an orange or two, and sped down the coast, messed around in a little lagoon along the beach for awhile, and headed back.

They said I'd be welcome back anytime, too. So next time I think I'll take it far away from the coast, to a remote island where I can camp for the night. I might be able to escape light pollution enough to see a full sky of stars. And Phil, who owns another kayak, said he might be down to come along. I'd love some company for a longer trip.

Shikes. Long read. I :tiphat: to you if you read this far. So how was your day?

Thanks.

I've been focusing on haste lately: when I decide I want something, I get to work immediately. Last night I wanted to go kayaking; twelve hours later, I went kayaking for almost no cost, and I made a few friends in the process.

It's all about doing it now, and ignoring that voice of doubt once you've decided you want something. Unless you're doing something that you know is wrong .. like stealing a macbook pro from an arts student. :rocket:
