want to start kayaking
    #14617679 -

When I was in high school, my parents made me go kayaking. At the time I wasn't really a big fan, but at the time I was also an anti-social shut-in dork who preferred the rush of opening up a brand-new video game to the rush of rapid-river kayaking. I went on one of those trips, practically had a heart attack, and decided it wasn't for me.

Anyway, things have changed since then and I want to try my hand at kayaking once again. I think I would appreciate it more this time.

Anybody here experienced with kayaking? What should I look for buying equipment? I'm looking over shit on eBay and there seems to be a wide variety of design and quality, some of it being very obviously not what I'm looking for (such as the inflatable kayak) and some being less obvious.

I too would be interested in learning more. I live in one of the best kayaking regions in the country and I've never even tried it.

I went to these lessons. There are certain techniques you have to learn, such as how to paddle, and also how to push yourself out of the airtight seal of the kayak if it capsizes, which takes some practice and a couple times getting helplessly stuck under water.

I think I would need a refresher course, because this is life-saving stuff if you're taking on the river.

I kayak every weekend. fucking love it. Best bet is to head to a sporting goods store and start asking questions. Also, consider how you are going to transport your new kayak.. very important. I'll be back on the water friday! Maybe I'll throw up a picture of my kayak "sinbad"

What do you plan on doing when you go out?

Are you going to go fishing and camping with it or just take it out for a cruise down a river now and then?

I'm reading the Wikipedia page about kayaks now and learning a lot. I just found out that there is such a thing as a sea kayak which is designed for voyages lasting days or weeks and appropriate for camping. :dudewtf:

That is so cool.

I'd like to be able to paddle around in open lakes and also to go whitewater kayaking.

Hey dude, I do alot of paddling an have been kayaking for the last 5 years or so. Recently got my coaching ticket.

Ive done mostly white water river stuff. waterfalls, big volume rivers etc. I have to warn you though KAYAKING IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!! if you get hooked you'll be doing it for the rest of your life

What I love about it is that ( like surfing) is that its a personal quest for the mastery of your environment (working in harmony/ going wid da flow). You could go kayaking the day you died and still learn something new.

What kinda paddling were you thinking of doing? theres so many!!!!
The first boat I got was an all round river boat. and that was off ebay. I would advise against spending too much money on a boat before you really know much about it. and if you can try before you buy

Dude look on www.playak.com for kit/boat/paddle reveiws.

Oh my God that is SO FUCKING COOL! :awetongue:

I'm really strongly interested in the type of whitewater stuff I did before, where I'm just speeding through a fat river full of rocks. It was so exciting. I'd prefer not to skip, but not to dawdle either on the part where I'm floating around in lakes to get a comfortable feel for the kayak.

Dude, if you are confident on the water and learn to roll fast you can pretty much get strait onto moving rivers.

What Im really interested in is multi-day river trips where you kayak down a river in boats full of whatever you need for camping. Its cool because as a group ur like your own support, and theres a huge sense of freedom. Plus you are seeing shit from a perspective that only you can. Its so awesome!

btw. If you look in my sig pic you can kinda make me out at the top of that waterfall

dude if you need any more advice or anything like that just hit me up

I love kayaking. I've never gone whitewater kayaking but I love just silently cutting though a lake as still as glass. I was thinking about picking up an 80 dollar kayak and just cruising around all of the lakes. I am staying tuned to this thread.

You'll probably want a sit-on-top one. They're nice because you can jump on and off easily and they are a lot lighter than most kayaks. Unless you're into some serious water you shouldn't get thrown off. They are also usually cheaper too in case you decide it isn't for you.

I've got an Old Town Castine 12 footer with waterproof storage in the front and the back for when I got out camping and day tripping. It's good for bashing over logs and going through shallow water when you know the bottom is going to scrape over rocks and stuff. I've had it for over 10 years and its still in great shape.

My other kayak is a Hobie Revolution sit-on-top fishing kayak that I take fishing and camping anywhere that doesn't have a lot of logs and crap to run the fins into. They are expensive but are worth every penny if you go out a lot.
