Peruvianoid? Red Spines
    #14596340 - 06/11/11 02:22 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Picked up this cutting from a very old (50 years at least) plant.  Everything I can find says it's a peruvianus or glaucus, but  the red spines are very different from the other peruvianoids in my garden.  Should I write the spine color off as genetic variation within a species, or should I view the spines as evidence of a different species?

I think it's got some T. cuzco genetics.  (The full blooded cuzcos aren't active,  but theres been many hybrids floating around and a few dedicated breeding programs.  It may very well be active)

What leads you to that? The spines on older growth are brown-gray, which I always thought to be a distinct way of differentiating peruvianus and cuzcoensis.

It definitely looks like some kind of cuzco to me

T. glaucus is as good a guess as any, I can't reliably tell the two apart.  (I will say though, the vendor this pic came from is less than reliable IMHO, so take it as you will)

Looks a hell of a lot like my cuzco's, that's for sure. The fact that the newest aereoles towards the top are kind of notched gives it away for me. It's not tall enough yet but I bet the spines towards the bottom will eventually be white.

What do y'all think about the red-spined cactus on the right in this pic?

I'm not so sure that I'd jump to the cuzcoensis/cuzcoid label so quickly. While the plant has some features that are slightly reminescent of cuzcoensis, the plant definitely shows some non-cuzcoid characteristics. For example, new spines in cuzcoensis tend to be distinctly yellow with a touch of orange, red or brown. The spines a bit short for even the shorter spined ends of cuzcoensis, and the spines are definitely brown. The epidermis does not resemble that of the KK242/Cuzcoensis that I have examined or own. If I had to pick a label it would be 'aff. peruvianus'.

I have a plant labeled 'macrogonus' which looks quite similar to your plant and there are a number of plants in AUS/NZ that look a lot like the one you posted.

The 'T. glaucus' that HW posted is not really T. glaucus though a major Trichocereus-only vendor sells it as that as does Koehres. The true T. glaucus is a relatively small and thin species of Trichocereus which is not currently known to be active.

Doc T: Viewer right or picture right?

Viewer right, the single plant, not the pup and branch.
