Psiloman's "Storage after drying" Tek

Many fungi afficionados can efficiently dry their fungi for their collections but still face a problem.Their fungi tend to loose part of their *very* precious nutrients if stored unappropriately... With a bit of common sense and imagination ,i have thought of a TEK which could prove usefull. It is helpfull with big quantities of fungi. You need: Jar for storage (with metal lid) Dessicant of choice (silica gel,or the dessicant tha comes in shoe boxes or the lid of effeveresent vitamin tubes) wire mesh and/or aluminium foil Small non aromatic candle, those in the metalic container! The idea is to put your dessicant on some short of small bag (teabag will do fine),place that in the jar and the add the dried fungi.Compress them a bit and then add the wire mesh or aluminium foil on top in order to compartmentise the jar.If u use aluminium foil puncture it so you have air circulation between the two compartments. Now light the candle and lower it onto the wire mesh/aluminium foil. You can do that using a holding loop of aluminium foil in order not to burn your hands!!!! Screw the METTALIC lid on the jar and ...VOILA!!!! For the finishing touch, cover the jar in aluminium foil so you dont get any exposure to light. The idea behind it is that the candle in the jar will burn out all the oxygen so it will considerably slow down the oxidation of the fungi's nutrients. The combustion will not be perfect so it will not yield just CO2 and H20.Minute amounts of by products will be present but do not worry about that.If any H20 is produced from the combustion the dessicant will take care of it. For those who worry about the candle raising the temperature in the jar at a level that it will speed up the oxidation,i have an extra tip.First of all the temperature in the jar is not going to be that high and above all its not going to be prolonged. For better results put the jar in the fride half an hour before putting the candle in and then place it back. This way the heat will dissipate quickly and also the low temperatures of the fridge will provide a further precaution against oxidation.Water vapour condensation should not be a problem Have faith in the dessicant Feel free to improvise and improve this method! I ,personally, developed this method because it is cost efficient and easy....If by any chance anyone else has thought of this method and posted it the forum, please inform me (to my best knowledge this wasnt written before in the forum) Enjoy and be safe!!
