any cab drivers on here?

i'm about to start driving on monday for my summer job. should be interesting. i was wondering if anyone shared my profession and wanted to share any advice or funny stories. i think it's going to be interesting, and hopefully profitable.

yeah it took me about 3 months to get permitted and trained. i'm hoping it'll be a good paycheck through the next 50 years of school. being that i'll be driving in the dallas/fort worth area, i have no doubt that it'll be interesting.

I really enjoyed it, like I said the cash was great, had a few incidents
which were a little disturbing but most of the time it was easy going, had
fun with it mostly.

i know you're big on security and safety pris. any tips? i'm thinking i'm going to be carrying a debit card linked only to an account with a couple of hundred dollars in it, no jewelry, stuff like that. i need to get some mace but haven't yet.

most of your business will be cash so that makes you a target, while almost
all people will be honest, you'll always have the risk of one, one of the
guys that worked with me was shot in a robbery about 3mos before I quit

start by keeping only about $50 that's easily accessible, if anyone asks, you
just came on the shift, in a car I'm partial to a cross draw holster because
it allows easy access and comfort while sitting... remember, always wear your
seatbelt, if someone says they intend to rob you, make use of that 2 ton
killing machine, bounce them around like a pinball in that back seat

Don't be like most asshole cabbies who think they own the road please.

Actually witnessed one, trying to make a right turn, almost hit a little kid who was starting to cross, and then actually have the nerve to start yelling and cussing at the kid's parents....when the kid had the right of way -_-

My mom does it part time on the weekends sometimes though, she usually makes pretty great money and says she actually kind of enjoys doing it.

good point... I was always a courteous driver in traffic and the passenger
never seemed to care, being a dickhead never got you anywhere any faster

I was pulling about $700/week a little over 20 years ago, that would be about $1200-$1400/wk now

lol, yeah, but we don't use it unless it's an emergency and we need to talk to the dispatch office.

clean driving record, no felonies within 5 years, be able to pass a two part exam (city code and mapsco), and the company you contract with puts you through training on how to use their data terminal in their car. you're a contractor for the cab company, not an employee. you're your own employee. all the garage cares about our their fees and you returning the car undamaged. you pay up front your lease fees and keep everything you make and work whenever you want.

oh, and obviously a valid driver's license is needed for the permit.

thanks. yes, the crowd here primarily consists of north africans and arabs, and persians. but they're a good crowd. very funny, hardworking. if they need help with something and you help them, they return the favor. i helped more than a few with the mapsco and directions during the city training course. i can't imagine being new to a city, much less a country and trying to take on the job. very ballsy.

and i hate to say this, but i'm a youngish looking white guy with a very disarming personality, and i think that may give me an advantage to getting better tips. i grew up and lived all over the city i'll be first working in as well, so that helps too.

we'll see though. i'm be sure to share my adventures as they happen. i start on monday.
