Mayan mushroom stones

Hello,

I've seen that the Mesoamericans produced "mushroom stones" from 500BC to 1500AD. I'd like to know if someone here has such mushroom stones, where they can be bought and at which price. I wonder if modern reproductions of mushroom stones are made and sold as antiquities (like the general mesoamerican art)?

I'm willing to buy one mushroom stone because I'm intrigued by the mushroom cult. I deeply respect the mesoamerican civilizations and the plants themselves, so it has nothing to do with a whim.

I'm pretty sure you can buy those things somewhere. Not original ones though, since those are probably in musea.

I hope someone else here knows where to get one.

or if not, find a stone carver guy and ask him to sculpt one for you

I might just mention briefly because I am not allowed to say much due to copyright and also to a promise tot he archeologists who have studied these so called shroom stones for the past fifty yeasr, but it turns out that they are not related to shrooms at all. As to proof, You will hafve to wait for the data from Jams Q. Jacobs regarding this matter.

You could check out some of his web-sites. He may have some data there but i am not sure, but i was asked not to reveal what they are related to, but i can guarentee you they have nothing to do with magic shrooms.

AS for buying some, They sell replicas in Mexico, but the real ones all belong to individuals and museums and were collected yearss ago before the present laws regarding archeological digs and the items found at such digs which most can no longer be owend by individuals. Unless you go down there and find one and steal it.

As is well known, only around two hundred 'mushroom stones' escaped destruction by the conquering Catholics who deemed native rites, religions, beliefs and artifacts-including mushroom stones as 'pagan idolatry'.Why not research the characteristics of said stones, invest in some hebel-[i think it's spelt like that],and try carving your own,maybe whilst under the guidance of the wondrous mushrooms themselves, we all have hidden talents and I for one would also be very interested in the acquisition of one, especially from one with a true 'passion' for the religion of Teonanacatl. Give it a go and if successful please pm me so I can put in my order--heaps of people would be beating at your door for them. Also, in regards to the matter of the stones not being based on entheogenic mushrooms,the smaller of the stones,found with mutates were presumably used for grinding the sacraments prior to use, not a concern or common practice in the use of edible mushrooms, and though some people think, because of the robust nature of the stones, that they are indeed based on more traditional, edible mushrooms such as Boletus edulis, this hypothesis does not explain the recurring association with reptilian or jaguar like base figures, animals tied to the spirit world of cultures throughout Mesoamerica.
Most of this I have 'borrowed' from P.Stamets book "Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World", so hats off to Mr.Stamets,plus, I am not narrow-minded enough to discount,off hand, the 'possibility' that future research shall prove all this wrong,I suppose I'm just one of the many who 'hopes' that modern science doesn't disprove the entheogenic importance of these stones.
Anyway, back to the question,I hope you succeed in finding either good replicas, or indeed, in producing them personally, If so, please let us know and you'll have a good number of customers waiting for these 'new' works of art. :mushroom2:

Is the ancient stone you're referring to as a Mushroom...Possibly a volcanic bubble, petrified?

Much thanks Wanderingx209x & nooneman! What price would you be willing to pay? If anyone's in Vancouver/BC, drop by and I'll cut you a good deal, just give me some notice via email. These things are really rare items (I could hardly find good pics for modeling them) and I want people to have them and know about them - thus I made them. In a couple months they'll be a bit more practical as "magic mushroom stones" with Azurescens spores on the bottom for use as an eventual means of inoculating rhododendron beds, wood chip gardens, patches etc. For decorative, and soil improvement purposes only of course, and only available to certain states and countries obviously! Unfortunately when every thing's said and done(, materials, casting, finishing, dyes, paypal, follow-up, wrapping/packaging, shipping...) with the statues I'm not left with too much in my pocket for them.  Anyways, a couple people have complained about the price, so I'm curious what do you think they're worth?

Well, I'm just poor right now, so I can't afford much in general. I think they're worth $100, but if I had they money just laying around I'd probably consider paying more. As it is, I could only really afford it for $60-80, and it's probably worth more than that in materials and time alone. Perhaps if you mass produced the successful models in some way you could drive the price down. But really, $100 is a reasonable price for these, and you could probably get more than $100 out of people who have the money. I'm just poor :shrug:

Perhaps you should offer different sizes for different prices. For instance, a marble looking large statue could be $200, while  a small trinket might be $50-80. If you offered a range of products at different prices, perhaps people would be more open to buying. Though I'd love to have a larger model, I'd definitely pay $50-80 for something smaller.

Perhaps you could charge more for painting, or for making it look like rocks other than the plain gray. That way, you could upsell while offering something for everyone at different prices.

I hear ya. I'm no rich man myself - by far. However, they ARE worth 200$ easily. I can't get all walmart with these things, they're obscure, specialty interest items. I make these things mainly because I enjoy it.

Will consider offering just plain concrete casts for less if that's the demand, I'm just hesitant to compromise quality. Like lots of statuary it IS just flat gray, dull concrete without the staining etc I do. I don't want to peddle junk, thats why I'm not casting in hollow painted plastic that'll get blown over by the wind, crack and fall apart. Many shysters simply exaggerate and pass gypsum products/concrete off as "antiqued stone or cast stone" because essentially concrete isn't much different from many kinds of stone (sedimentary in particular) in any case. Concrete only gets stronger with age. My statues as they are, will last as long as the originals have. But hey, we do live in a disposable, convenience driven culture do we not?

Those are wonderful work! Nice Job :smile: I actually was looking all over a few years back for a mushroom stone replica, so I know how hard they are to find. You should Definitely put some up in the Marketplace.

Well I know that the Mexican government illegalizes the selling of ancient artifacts, but for those who were looted and sold for profit, well the government has no control over that. Actually, the artifacts from the LACMA, los angeles museum, are all private owned.. So yea, there just has to be many out there. Personally, I wouldn't want to own it and just give it or sell it back to the museums so that the public can see them..
