Temporary Disability?

I'm curious if anyone's ever been in a situation where they've been injured and unable to work, and if they chose to get on this, whether or not it was a good decision and if I should.
I tore my ACL recently, and damaged the femur last month. The femur should be mostly healed, but the ACL needs to be completely reattached. I was on the hunt for a job around the time that I injured myself, now there's pretty much no chance for me to get a job do to the fact that I can't lift anything, or really walk well without crutches and a knee brace. In addition, in two weeks I'll be getting reconstructive surgery, which will have me off my leg again for awhile, plus months of physical therapy. I probably won't be able to get work for another few months.
Now I've never been on unemployment, I figured if I'm searching for a job it'll happen, and usually it does within 3 months if it's really bad, but this is a bit different. I'd love to be out there finding a job, but I still have to sit halfway through the shower because it hurts to stand. I'm looking forward to the reconstructive surgery, but a 6 month complete healing time, that's ridiculous if I can't work that long. I'm sure I'll be able to work within a few months of the surgery, just not any construction or industrial work. However for the next few months I'm pretty much a fucking black hole as far as money goes.
Any suggestions?

Well unless you where let go from a job and qualify for unemployment they won't be able to help.
If you are considering disability I think that is through the Social Security Office. yup, http://www.ssa.gov/pgm/disability.htm
Just found this,
Quote:
Can you win social security disability or SSI disability benefits on the basis of a torn ACL?
Answer: The Social Security Administration's disability evaluation system does not focus on a claimant's diagnosis, but, rather, on the functional limitations a claimant has. In other words, the name of the condition is not the chief consideration. How the condition "affects and limits: the indiviual is the primary concern. So, yes, disability benefits can be won on the basis of nearly any condition provided that the condition is sufficiently limiting.
They might be able to say you can get a job at a call center.
I think you will have to actually call and talk to someone. Unless, of course someone here has experiance in the matter but... I think a lot of time on hold or a long time in the waiting room is where you will get your answer.
Sorry I am not much of a help.

I Do qualify for unemployment, but being that I can't actively seek a job now, it wouldn't do me any good (as you have to fill out at least 4 applications a day and walk around and find work while you're on it). I can't really do that, and with surgery in 2 weeks, I'll be out for another 4-6 before I can' start carrying stuff again. Hopefully 2-4 max on crutches.

What you have to do is to fill out a sheet detailing that you searched for work at one location per week.
And that's all you have to do. Once you advance in tiers you will be required to list 3 places per week.
The most important thing is making sure the address you list is accurate. No one verifies or qualifies your work-search claims. They are accepted on their face.

I should point out that this varies by state.

the process of getting disability through the SSA is long and arduous, with several jobs I bought supplemental insurance to cover temporary disabilities
