Note: Not a troll by any means. I recently purchased a folding knife for self-defense purposes (my mother was recently assaulted by two me.) I hope to never find myself in a situation in which I would have to actually use it against someone, but you never know. Anyways, I bought a 'folding' knife because it's compact and quick. However, I am not able to swing it open in a quick manner in the case of a threatening situation. Is this because it is brand new and should I apply WD-40 to it, or is it that I bought a knife that is not suitable for my intentions?

Yeah man, try the WD-40. If that doesn't work then go buy a switchblade.

don't carry a knife for self-defence unless you are prepared to stab and possibly kill someone with it. if you think waving a knife around will scare off a determined attacker be prepared to have it knocked out your hand and used to stab you.

*Defense. I see your point, but still think that in a potentially threatening situation that the presence of a weapon will show the attacker that I'm not to be messed with. And I wouldn't be "waving a knife around", I know how to use a knife in a combat situation.

If you know how to use a knife in a combat situation, you'll know you don't show your enemy your knife, you cut and stab them with it, hopefully without them even realising you had it. and a great way of turning a "potentially threatening situation" into a kill-or-be-killed situation, is to pull a weapon, especially if it's a knife, and he has a gun. and if you say *realizing, I'll cut you up bad.

WHAT? a guy has a gun, your 80% most likely dead if conflict occurs. mace is much better then a knife. A gun is the best. Either way never ever be against gun restriction laws. Those will allow you to own a gun and people wont fuck with you.

Get a switchblade or a butterfly knife. Something that was designed for human cuttery. Go get one a swapmeet. Stiletto man. Oh, if you do carry it.. like the people above said.. be prepared to use to. Also because if you cut someone and don't finish them off then you will go to jail for murder. From what I understand of the law, when it comes to guns and knives.. you pretty much can't claim self defense unless you finish the guy off. Straight wreck'em.
I think it's because if you cut someone up then it wasn't a "life or death situation" and therefore you could have gotten away without using it. Just rumors though so don't take my word for it. Kinda like if someone breaks into your house and you pull a gun. Everyone knows you aim to kill him because if you shoot him in the leg then you will have a lot of shit to go through to prove your innocence. Who knows ? anyone ?

Oh yeah.. I forgot.. like the above dude mentioned, mace or pepper spray. Way more safe, clean and easy to use. hell you could take out a whole squad of criminals with a can of pepper spray. Thats my weapon of choice when I go on road trips etc...

Knives are a bad choice for intimidation. Without training in how to use one, and the will to do so, it's all too easy to have it taken away from you. ..and then used against you. Instead, take some self defense classes, and try not to get yourself into those sorts of situations.

this. the best defence from attack is not being attacked in the first place.
