Hmm.. Its a bit academic now but the self defence point raised is quite an important one, as I expect this thread will be dug up. Now I don't want to sound all commandostyle because I aint nor do I want to be. Out of a practical need for self defense options I reviewed the matter. OK here goes..
Wiccan_Seeker on self defence weapons.
First of all a weapon is almost always a resort an unskilled person takes to cope with his fear. (the insecurity = fear factor named) If you are very self-confident you generally don't think of a weapon because then you're convinced you'll kick his or their collective asses.
Such a person will walk the streets and nightlife briskly, full of energy and alertness and void of shyness signs. These people are seldom fucked with because you do not take on He-Man if you can mug Orko
No matter how big you are: display submissive signs and not just thugs but even dogs will tend to fuck with you, meaning its a biology thing and not specifically human. I used to have that dog problem (lol) I now know how easy it is to snap even a Rottweiler's neck when he's got you in the arm or leg (your heh.. bait) and my "bring it on!" mentality towards our canine friends has completely turned the situation where they go out of their way to be liked. (I really love dogs, but growling and such had eclipsed that for some years)
Humans are quite different. When encountering you may get into several special situations. You've got your drunk fool, the disgruntled barfly, the macho and so forth. These are the easiest as the rage usually is way bigger then the skill and open hand combat needs some strategy.
A step up is the armed guy. Now almost always they will be either steel or firearms as blunt instruments are not so common. Steel generally devides in slashing and stabbing. Slashing is impressive but bullshit. The 9-11 hijacks with boxcutters could have been completely prevented. A boxcutter can be used as a kubotan or a slash weapon. If your average Joe sets out to kill me with a boxcutter I feel a little confidence. Slashes easily snag on clothing and nobody wants an inch-deep wound (and severed nerves, the worst thing for an arm or leg) but its nowhere near the 5 inches minimum for a combat knife. So a boxcutter is a bullshit knife. Anyone with any skill who wants to use a kubotan/yawara and uses a boxcutter is a moron. A boxcutter lands you in jail. One of those really small metal flashlights or a length of broomstick that's coarsed up for better grip and extends a thumb's width under and above your fist is at least as effective and "five inches of broomstick" sounds too silly for police paperwork if you're a clean dude. A kubotan/yawara requires skill and practice. For the average dude its a great tool for crushing up a hard pressed xtc tablet but as a weapon it does not much good if you haven't extensively trained. Hmm.. on with the show.
The most dangerous steels are the chef's/butcher knife and the slim screwdriver. Even when skilled and in need of conflict be extremely cautious with these opponents. These types kill. Butcher's knives are usually very sharp, sturdy and long and even a teenage hooligan can ram a screwdriver into a car hood. Nuff said? You do NOT want steel because it is often lethal and lacerations can cripple. Steel = Deadly weapon = Jail if they want you.
BOOM! The gun. The most obvious are the handgun (pistols for criminals and revolvers for defence) and the derringer (a small hide-away handgun) As to caliber: when it comes to -point-number- calibers anything with a two (like .20 LR) will get you nowhere but the OR to surgically retrieve your overgrown bb pistol from your anus. It has to be .3X and up to be any good. Derringers starting from .3X are not whimpy at the close range of self defence if you actually payed some money for it. Do not carry a gun illegally. Its likely a ticket to jail and it has additional risks (like LSD and firearms do not mix ) Suicide risk (anybody has an off day) Accidental shooting (your kid) and gun misuse (to use a gun and engage in violence, like rage killing and other impulsiveness that would not have happened if a firearm had not made you lash out when you really shouldn't.) You do NOT want to carry a gun. Faced with a gun you're in the deepest shit as weapons go. You might learn to do a round-flip highkick but can that compete with a scared guy that merely needs to bend his finger to blast some of your body into a ball of meatloaf the size of a tangerine?
So steel and guns are out. Lethal weapons are not what you want, what you want should you want to carry something is swift incapacitation. A guy I know has a sheath of cloth in his jacket sleeve holding an arm's length of garden hose. Ouch.. Don't want to pull a boxcutter on him I would guess it's about as effective as a straight police baton and has the same reach. (reach is the sole reason for swords in the medievel arms race :-) ) It looks discouraging too and requires little skill. Do not go for the clever zapper. The stun guns and tasers are not too effective. Its not like BZZ! and he's out.. it might require a five second hug. Leather coats may render it effective and a little moisture can make you exclaim a whole new book of psalms while still in peril. Ehmm, no.
Now the most dangerous group consists of single people who are high on stimulants or PCP analoges (LSD rages generally are way beyond rage to be highly dangerous. A flipper may often throw the pack of marlboros at you instead of the 1/2 lb brass ashtray ), groups of thugs and trained fighters with for instance a disliking to your skin color or the way you glance at them. Frankly in this case a gun would be best with the group and hand-to-hand combat skills with the individuals.
Which leaves the spraycans. Usually these contain CS or CN when they're teargas and perhaps coctails with even DM if they're left overs from army equipments. DON'T. These are not nearly as effective as pepperspray (they take time and some can withstand them) and the only thing thats good about them is that they store well.
Finally: Pepperspray! There's all kinds of it around. There are foggers (mist) squirters (a jet like a waterpistol) and foamsquirters. Foggers are the worst choice (they can turn on you) and foamsquirters the very best. In some martial arts one may throw ground hot pepper (habanero ) in the face of the attacker. (not in matches, DUH!) If it squirts you can aim. If it squirts and it foams and it's sticky too its most effective, foamsquirters are favored by some taxi drivers as they do not splatter and physically cover the eyes etc. Important: how far can it squirt and does it empty al at once or can you use more bursts, and if so how much squirting time you have to aim etc. Next to the gun the pepperspray is a good #2. Good peppersprays state how hot the capsicum oil (oleoresin Capsicum) is thats in it. How much cap there isin there (%) is not so important. The point is the heat of it. Capsicum is measured in heat units called "Scoville Heat Units"(aka SHU or "Scovilles") if your oil is 10.000 SHU one drop will taste acrid in 10.000 drops (1/2 liter) of water. Ground Cayenne pepper usually measures 30.000-50.000 SHU. Dried Habaneros often fall between a whopping 75.000-300.000 scovilles. The usual range of heat of peppersprays ranges from 25.000-200.000 SHU. What you would be looking for is at least 100.000 SHU which is quite good by itself.
Despite this weapons talk I'd say learn fighting skills. Really. I'd say practical stuff. Krav, Muai thai and a lot of specific self-defence courses that are not pussytalk but actually discuss driving fingers into eyes and that kind of stuff that actually works in a life or death situation. TRAINING GIVES CONFIDENCE CONFIDENCE DECIMATES THE CHANCE OF BEING RANDOMLY TARGETED.
And there's another thing.. You may have this super Glock with the he-man looks and the mercury filled teflon coated full metal Jaws movie mothers but in the real world it may take 2 seconds to draw in which you get your eyes poked in, your shinbone kicked to gravel and a bitchslap for good measure. Nothing beats the speed of hands and the kick of a quality shoe to the lower leg.
BY ALL MEANS: AVOID FIGHTING WHENEVER POSSIBLE. A big gorilla will throw you to the ground, sit on top of you and pound your chest with both fists. Now if you're a gorilla too that'll hurt and it will get the message through you went outta line. Now humans are Great Apes too but civilisation, modern life and the whole mass-everything experience combined with our exploded brains unfortunately made us as vicious like Apes in the zoo. I'd rather get beaten up by a wild gorilla then a biker punk with a chain and padlock who thinks he'll get relief from his miserable life by focussing on drawing blood. Society is pretty fucked up, let's prevent letting some asshole fuck -us- up too...
Don't do stupid stuff and stay well in body AND mind

Lua is not a fancy martial art. It is a battle sport, developed purely for "beating the crap our of somebody". It is a very painful and very dangerous in capable hands.
