fractals seem to be a favorite of the means to mix science and philosophy (or idle speculation) as Seuss mentions, but the proponents of them seem pretty seldom able to do anything useful with them towards that end.

Infinity is not a number and can not be multiplied by zero. Integer 1 is 1 integer greater than zero. The space between zero and 1 on a number line can be broken into an infinite number of "tick marks." Any questions?

From my now somewhat hazy recollection of real analysis I believe that you are trying to seek Dedekind cuts.

I am pretty bad with math and only use it when necessary for data analysis (mostly statistics). 

Reading through this thread and quickly checking some of the things mentioned and some of the wiki links was interesting. 

As far as the difference between zero and one, it seems to me like nothing and then something.  Where something can be anything.  My curiosity about it though is probably more philosophical but is math truly a universal "language?"  Are the concept of our integers probably the same if say another intelligent species existed somewhere else in the universe?  Would math be performed in the same way?  I just wonder because when you hear about some theories in physics of extra dimensions that we are unable to perceive it makes me wonder if we're biologically limited in what we consider logical and fact.

Rereading the above seems kinda dumb I guess since there is no way of answering it (and it derailed the thread even more), BUT!, it's always fun to wonder even if your understanding of something leads to dumb questions.  :lol:

To be completely informal with my mathematics, infinity times zero does equal one, but then again infinity times zero equals any number you can think of because the limit of x/y where x is a fixed constant and y tends towards zero from the right-hand side is equal to infinity (diverges).  If you take this limit from the left-hand side you get negative infinity, however, which just throws a giant monkey wrench into the morass of incorrect equations generated thus far.  :smile2:

Infinity isn't a number, so you can't just go around multiplying it like that.  It's meaningless.

Yes, the math we do would be universally done, although most likely with different symbols for everything.

They might have gone farther then we have, even to the point of there maths potentially being unreadable in to our undereducated mathematicians, but they should understand our math once we explain the symbols.

That is unless they are telepathic or something crazy like that so they don't even use language or symbols at all, but talking about that is like talking about unicorns.

@ OP:

I think the space between zero and one if finite, namely one unit as people suggested. I also think however that zero is by it's nature infinite so you can't really logically count between nothing and something the same way you can between two somethings. I think its probably mostly the same in practice but also fundamentally different philosophically.

I think this can be best demonstrated by zero's history, it wasn't even invented till after the romans. Think about their numerals: MXI etc, no zeros because zero is such a different idea.
