Is one infinitely more than zero?
    #12126243 -

And is a number a finite number of infinities?

In standard mathematics, infinity is a concept, not a numerical value.  People often confuse philosophy with mathematics when thinking about infinity and how it relates to numbers.

So if we turn it into a philosophical discussion, interpreting 'zero' and 'number' as philosophical concepts, how would you answer the question? Does it make sense then?

i dont know, a single unit or donamanation , like i have 6 beers and i drink one i have 5 left

i think theres some tribe somewhere that dosnt use numbers just like some, more and even more, or something like that

so infinity a anti-number

Obviously 1 is 1 more than 0...

And no, a number is not a finite number of infinities - that doesnt even make sense does it?

Define 1

I believe in number theory 1 is defined as as the set which contains zero; {0}.  Zero is defined as the empty set; {}, so one is defined as the set containing only the empty set; {{}}.  All natural numbers are defined this way, using nested sets.

"1" is just a symbol.  It can mean whatever you want.  In mathematics, it can be taken to mean at least a few different things: the integer 1, a unit vector, a unit tensor, a particular set, etc...

See: Set-theoretic Definition of Natural Numbers for a discussion of the ways to define the natural number 1.

1 is infinitely more than 0. It is easy to see how one gets to this conclusion.

However..

0 multiplied by infinity still equals 0

The answer to your question; yes and no. Infinity seems to be steeped in paradox.

I'm not a mathematician and I wish I could understand more about number. It is my view that reality is EVERYTHING BETWEEN 0 AND 1.
0 being absolute nothingness, 1 being completeness and infinity.

A moderator should move this to the correct forum, like the philosophy one, because that's all that this discussion can lead to....

Sometimes it is more fun to have science and tech people talk about philosophical aspects of science and tech, imo.

That's understandable.  However threads like this often draw in people who end up just making senseless ramblings, a pointless argument ensues, and before you know it, there is a 10 page thread with people making rediculous arguments that could hardly be called scientific.  Like this thread.

It's alright, I don't really mind either way.

What may seem like a collection of senseless arguments to you, could be tantalizing philosophical discussion on the foundations of science to someone else. It's up to you to either appreciate that viewpoint, or discard it as senseless.

Hey man, I'm not trying to stop anyone from enjoying a discussion on here.  I wasn't being serious when I posted that last night, maybe I was a little crankey...

I just don't find 99% of the "philosophical discussions" on here to be tantalizing.  I love scientific/mathematical philosophy, from Descartes to Hofstadter, but most of the time on message boards, and this one is no exception by any means, these discussions usually end up being far from scientific, unbiased, and full of ignorant pseudo-flame wars.

  Whatever floats your boat, man.

I must admit that I can't denied that. Don't worry about it, slept bad last night, /me :crankey: too.

what happened to this discussion? :frown:

I enjoy thinking that the universe is made possible, in its most primitive nature, thanks to a delicate balance between 1 and 0.:boobs:
