Are there ways to reduce my ping/latency?
    #14105233 - 03/11/11 06:20 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

So I've never really had to much trouble with my ping before. Its always been higher than most peoples but it hasn't gave me to many trouble up until now.

I'm running Vista. I've used TCP optimize and that actually made it worse. I'll be happy to provide any needed information.

What type of internet connection and router are you using (wireless)?

Wired with a 6ft cord. The router is a Westell A90.

That consistently measures my ping at around 140s But when playing online I get measures of 500+

No I mean is it cable/dsl and what provider?

Do you have a lot of stuff setup with your router?

Back when I had DSL my quality of service took a complete shit and it wasn't until weeks went by of customers complaining that Windstream, a horrifying ISP imo, admitted a switch or something was defective and they finally replaced it.

That is a bad ping for 100 miles.  I just pinged Illinois from Cleveland area earlier today and got 23.1mb down/ 750kbp up with RoadRunner +Turboboost.  If you have cable I would call the company because maybe you have signal loss.  My last apartment had to have all the splitters replaced and an amplifier put in.  DSL can have other weird problems.  My buddy would lose connection when it rained.

If you are able to bypass the router and plug a laptop/desktop directly into your modem to troubleshoot and see if the connection still sucks then it is probably your ISP.

For years I never used a router and had my desktop plugged directly into my Motorola surfboard.  Could be worth a shot to rule out the router.

Its DSL which is the only thing I can get where I am at.  The provider is Frontier, which was Verizon, or is Verizon or whatever. Not sure. A while ago the name on my bill switched.

I can't really bypass anything because there is only one little box. It plugs into the phone jack, my PC into it.

I had Verizon DSL; absolute garbage.

Glad to have Comcast back.

That said, North American speeds are significantly less than European speeds.  That's partly because there is SO much less geography to cover and partly because Europe, per capita, is much more wealthy than many areas of the U.S. that receive high-speed internet.

HOWEVER, most of this is due to trusts that exist between competing companies and the government.  Speeds haven't gone up (much) and prices haven't gone down (at all) in 20 years.

So you don't have a router then.  You just have a modem.  There is a slight possibility that the modem is going bad, but either way you need to have access to talk to Frontier because if you rent one they'd need to send a tech and if you bought one I'm pretty sure they'd need the MAC but not positive on that.  I vaguely remember my DSL being PPPoE and using a username/password or some shit.

In all the instances in which I've seen DSL either from my own service or that of friends and family it has always been pretty terrible compared to cable.
