Fritzl's secret dungeon to be welded shut after rat-infested scene of horror becomes illegal party venue for teenagers

Austrian authorities are to seal Josef Fritzl’s horror-house with a welded steel door after teenagers have been partying in his secret dungeon.

The secret underground cellar where he held his daughter Elisabeth against her will for 24 years has been violated in the months before contractors move in to demolish the house.

Old computers, smashed up chairs, a mattress, drug paraphernalia, smashed alcohol bottles and soiled clothes litter the warren of rooms that Fritzl constructed beneath the family home in Amstetten.

The illegal partygoers gained access to the cellar via an unlocked garage door to the house in Ybbstrasse in the Austrian town of Amstetten.

Fritzl constructed eight rooms in all, each one separately locked before the final ‘dungeon room’ accessible through a three ft. square solid steel door built into the left-hand corner of a wall and concealed by rows upon rows of shelving.

An intruder who entered the premises said: 'The shelving has all been stripped away and the secret cellar door was ajar. There is no lock on it. But I didn’t go into there, although it was clear people had.

'The smell is atrocious; there has been no air and mildew covers the walls while the floors have deep puddles in places. It has become somewhat ‘cool’ among the young in Amstetten to say you have been down in "the cellar". You don’t have to say which one - everyone knows what you mean.

'Rat droppings have intermingled with the stubs of cigarettes and food wrappers. There is no electricity but partygoers have used candles.

'The walls are very thick. You can play music down there and no-one will hear, or see any light.

'The word went out before Christmas that the garage door was open. You descend down a slope into his garage and then into the cellar. It’s easy. The cops stopped watching the place long ago.'

During his incarceration of Elisabeth, who was bundled into the cellar when she was just 18 by her sexually obsessed father, Fritzl locked the last secret door to his prison using a TV remote control changer.

Initial reports that it was on a sophisticated time lock were untrue - the door can be opened with a simple key available from hardware stores.

It is understood that Elisabeth - who bore Fritzl seven children during her captivity, of whom six survived - is furious at the 'invasion' of the cellar.

An intensely private person, she lives in a house guarded by fencing, security lights and CCTV cameras in a cul-de-sac in a village some 40 miles away from where her ordeal took place. Her children live with her.

The last family member to enter the cellar was her mother Rosemarie who collected some of her daughter’s possessions from the labyrinth shortly after she learned of her husband’s grotesque secret in April 2008.

Fritzl, 75, who is serving life imprisonment for rape, enslavement and negligent homicide over the death of one of the newborn babies he fathered with Elisabeth, recently had his plans to regenerate his property empire from behind bars thwarted.

He received planning permission for an office block, a row of terraced houses and an underground car-park while in jail because the request had been submitted before he was caught and his lawyer was pursuing the plans.

Following an outcry, the permission was rescinded on a technicality: the risk of flooding from the River Ybbs that runs through Amstetten.

While workmen are expected to weld shut the back door to his cellar this week, plans to demolish the house are being finalised. It is expected that the local authority will give no advance notice as to when this might be to keep sightseers and the media at bay.
