Buying a laptop, any help would be nice
    #13940230 -

I've kind of narrowed it down to this: http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/898773/Toshiba-Satellite-L675D-S7104-Laptop-Computer/

Good deal, bad deal?  Any advice from tech geeks are welcomed.

IMO Toshibas are the best in quality. I know several laptop repairmen who will vouch for that as well.

I got the three year one and the cd player/burner went after 2. I got it fixed free. I had the money at the time to buy the warranty(school money). I still own the comp, 3 years old last month. HP9715 NR. For what I paid there is triple the memory and such today. I will keep it for another couple of years though.

I was just thinking of making a thread similar to this one.  I am also in the market for a laptop.  My girlfriend dumped a glass of water on mine and destroyed it last summer.  I am expecting a good tax refund this spring, and would like to purchase a new one.

The laptop that the OP is looking for feedback on is about what I am looking for.  I don't need anything cutting-edge, but I'm looking for something that will be decently quick.  I really like the large screen, and $529.99 seems really reasonable.  Does anyone know anything about the AMD Turion II processor?  Is this a good deal?

A friend of mine who's a tech nerd purchased this model a few months ago for about 100 dollars more.  He's had no problems with it.

So, I think I'm going to buy it.

It's a good deal, lots of ram and memory, should have no problem with it's performance.

The life span of laptops is probably about 3-4 years.

That is exactly why I don't want anything that is cutting edge.  It will be obsolete in 2 years anyway, and I don't really do much PC gaming.  I would be willing to part with no more than $1000, but I would feel much more comfortable in the $500-$800 range...

strongly recommend against toshiba. I work fixing computers and we always see a number of toshiba with problems due to poor construction. The screen assembly is always falling apart and the cases just aren't worthy of traveling. IBM, Dell, Lonovo seem more solid, imo.

Anyways, manufacturer isn't all that important. You can find a better computer for $530 though. You should try and get something with a new Intel i series processors (i3, i5 or i7) - they have some nice new features and are very fast. Here's one for $20 more that is a whole lot nicer.

AMD Turion II looks like the AMD equivalent of Intel Core 2 mobile processors.
45nm core which is small and cool. 35W isn't too bad either for 2 cores.

The only thing that would bug me would be the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250...
But that only matters if you want to play semi-demanding 3D games.

It's a good deal though.

EDIT: I'm not sure how good Toshiba laptops are though.
I've had good experience with HPs and Dells.

2 votes for mac huh?  I really hate macs.  Between my family members, there are 2 mac laptops, an ipad, and a minimac desktop.  I can't figure out how to do anything more than open a browser and surf the web.  My family loves them, but I'd like to stick with a PC...

What makes it a better buy?  Besides the manufacturer and processor, the only difference I see is that the ACER has a smaller screen, smaller hard drive, lower resolution screen, less video memory, and a shorter battery life.  Why is Intel so much better than AMD?
