Good Time Boogie Festival
    #9434723 -

Has anyone heard about a members-only, mostly middle-aged hippie festival called the Good Time Boogie Festival?  I guess it's always held in the Virginia area?  A friend of mine told me that her mom goes to it every year.  She said that they change location every year to avoid crashers, they pay $15,000-20,000 to rent out a farm for one weekend (to make up for the farmers damaged crops), only allow 3,000 people in and send members the invitation and directions in the mail each year.

It sounds like my kind of festival.  Everyone has to be cool and anyone who causes drama gets banned.

According to my friend, they aren't accepting new members.  She said that they used to, but that it got too big and they had to cut it off.  All members get to bring one guest.  They used to have a swearing in ceremony of sorts for guests if they had been to the festival for a number of years without causing trouble or anything.

They have something similar to that here in central florida. I've never been to it, but I dated a girl whose grandmother was went to it.

I've never heard of any other ones though.

Wow! This question was posted 2 years ago, but I am compelled to comment anyway. I went to three Good Time Boogies, way back in the '80s. Had a very LARGE time each year, to be sure. Basically, it's a group of people who grew up around and/or went to college around Greenville. After graduation, folks became scattered across the U.S. and the GTBoogie was formed as a reunion of sorts. In addition to the core group, each member introduced a friend or friends to the Boogie over the years. There were easily 2,000-2,500 young men and women -- some couples with their babies or toddlers -- at the Boogies I went to. It was awesome to be among so many people my age! Each year, invites are sent and monies collected. Then folks begin to descend on the designated location (usually to VA/NC line) beginning the Thursday before Memorial Day Weekend, stake out their camp/tent site, and head to the main Boogie area, where the stage and kegs are located. The beer never stops flowing ... and neither do the tunes. One year, a band called Dead Frogs From Hell played at about 2-3AM. It was rumored that the town's people heard the band and wrote us up as a bunch of devil worshipers! The Tuesday before this past Memorial Day weekend, it hit me ... I could smell it in the air ... it was Boogie time. I emailed a galfriend. She replied it was the 37th or 39th Good Time Boogie and the theme this year was Midsummer's Nights Dream. The Good Time Boogie is one heck of a good time, that's for sure!!

There's a summer solstice gathering around here similar to that - only a few hundred people though. It's held on the same guys property every year and he has a labyrinth and crazy giant sculptures built up in the woods. There's music, and presentations, and lots of sharing of food and drugs... You have to go 3 years before you can invite one other...

I personally am not into it at all - never felt accepted by the old timers and always felt they sort of resented the younger crowd. *shrugs*

Id rather go to an outdoor electronic music festival, than hang out with a bunch of old hippies, anyways.

It must be the time of year americanwoman1953, I was lucky enough to be invited a couple times myself around 2005. By far the most magical time Ive spent anywhere with some of the purest individuals anyone will ever meet. Unfortunately my sponsor lost his invite a couple years later because he hadnt attended for a few years in a row, and even after begging and pleading, we couldn't reignite his interest. Ive since traveled westward, but there hasn't been a memorial day weekend since when I haven't reminisced about my experience there. And even though I pray to one day be able to go again, I 'll always appreciate having been able to go. Happy Boogie!
