its the same as all the other SSRIs

definitely preferable to prozac, and pretty much the same as celexa.

its less zombifying than prozac, and the time you have to not take it to be able to trip is shorter. I quit taking it though. Sometimes you need SSRIs, I know they've helped me through pretty dire mental situations, but some advice that I give to everyone i talk to about SSRIs is this: don't look at it as a long term solution. after a while they get almost impossible to quit. Seems to me that seeing life through the foggy lense of SSRIs is not a good thing.

yeah man id stay off the anti depressents if i were you, ive never tried them but ive seen friends hate them after a while,

and then there's always the commercials by a law firm every 5 minutes asking if me or one of my loved ones has experienced "death, heart attack thoughts of suicide or stroke" in relation to some anti depressent

I started with 10mg Lexapro, then went to 20mg twice a day - it was the maximum amount.

Side effects include weird sleep patterns, jaw clenching and yawning during the day, and reduced appetite.

Psychologically, it alleviated worrisome stress. It got to the point that I was overly carefree and nonchalant, almost amotivational. However, it doesn't help with "social" anxiety, and doesn't boost confidence.

I'd say it's only good for 2-3 months to get on your feet.

ALL psychiatric medication is bad! Never touch it! Self medicate with weed, opioids, and/or psychedelics.

From what I've read you can also experience "brain zaps" when you stop taking it.  :what2:

Have you tried any alternative remedies for your depression OP?

Sounds like a GREAT way to get addicted.

All SSRI's will obliterate your sex drive so be ready to be asexual until you get off them.

Brain zaps happened to me after Paxil.

I've been in something similar(different names here in Europe)and it did help me see the big picture. It got me out of the deep hole i was, where i saw nothing but problems, darkness, stupid self pitty and anxiety attacks.

But dont hang on to that for long!
As soon as you start gettin better,go to your Doc again for him to start a program so you start taking less and less without redrawl sindrome.
And than just go on your merry life.

Its just an opinion like any other, but the truth is that anti-depressants can help some people at times.Much more than a trip that might go wrong cuz your brain's already going emo on you.

If the Doc told you to take it,try it.It takes an average of 3weeks to start really making you feel "normal".If after a month you decide its not your thing, just go there again, explain him,and follow the steps to get off it.

Good luck!

Yea Ive been on lexapro for almost a year now.  Started out at 10mg ed.  I have been diagnosed  with dysthymia  a chronic type of depression in which a person's moods are regularly low (middle ground all the time).  It sucks cause I rarely smile and am like eeyore, just humdrum all the time. Most people think Im just really chill though, so thats a benefit I guess.  Watch zach braff's character in Garden State.  That pretty much paints a good picture.  As far as SSRI's are concerned, lexapro is the only ssri that I can tolerate that actually has an effect. I have tried prozac, wellbutrin, paxil, and celexa.  Also been on buspar, strattera, klonopin, ativan, and adderall IR.  I forgot to mention I have GAD and inattentive ADD. The lexapro does help in alleviating minor anxiety/worry issues, so that is a plus.  Ive also went without being on medication for many years too. I can say that I would like to get off, as of now, because lexapro and other ssri's just make you feel void.  It all comes down to how the person reacts to the meds, what works for me might not work for you.  If you really need something at this present time, trial and error might be necessary.  Many people will tell you that its all in your head.  All I can say is seek guidance from within yourself and your present moment.  Meds are just crutches basically that you need to learn from like any other mind/habit altering substance.  I hope you find what works for you and please do not become dependent on any pill.  Learn from and adapt so you can move on, on your own.

Looks like we've got another name on the ignore list to avoid indulging in wrath.

I can't emphasize how fucking bad this advice is enough.

self medicating with weed and the occasional psych is ok. but with opioids? OF COURSE theyll help with depression, in the shirt term. theyll leave you wayyy worse in the long term

I have a friend who's been on it for many years. If I was her I'd probably try to get off it, but she seems comfortable on it and she remains sharp as a tack.

My dad also took something similar once. It seemed to help him when he was on it, then when he decided he didn't need it anymore he quit with no problem. He said that he would never really feel "bad" on it, but he also never really felt "good."

The withdrawals sound like shit, though. I feel like I once had "brain zaps" on mushrooms, I would not like to experience something like that sober.

I would personally view SSRI's as a last resort. I've had bad anxiety and panic attacks before, but nothing debilitating. If you have bad days sometimes it's probably not the answer; if every day is a bad day, you might want to consider it. They can work wonders for people who are cornered by their symptoms.

Psychopharmaceuticals are pretty serious business as far as drugs go, but generally that's because they work.

I had better luck with stuff that targets dopamine / norepinephrine. Which is what I take now.  :snowman:

brain zaps are a little bit fun.

i quit lexapro a week before i went on vacation, and i just remember walking down the beach and everything would spin and dissapear for a second and then come back. it was kinda amusing. but only because i didnt have shit to do besides sit on the beach and drink.

if i was at home it woulda been extremely annoying.

I don't recommend it.

If you're determined to take an antidepressant, I would try cymbalta or pristiq instead
