The Truth About JWH as told by Dr. John W. Huffman * 2
    #13829506 -

I recently sent an email to Dr. Huffman requesting his thoughts and feelings on JWH and its recent upturn in popularity. He promptly replied to me and id like to share his email with you my fellow shroomery board surfers

Thank you for your interest in my research. I hope
this written summary will answer your questions.

The intense interest, of course, is a result of the appearance of
so-called "fake marijuana" products sold under names such as K2 and Spice.
Some of these products have been found to contain synthetic cannabinoid
compounds JWH-018 and JWH-073, which were first developed in my laboratory
more than 15 years ago in research funded by the National Institute on
Drug Abuse (NIDA).

I will briefly describe the nature of that research, but first I want to
stress that these compounds were not meant for human consumption. Their
effects in humans have not been studied and they could very well have
toxic effects. They absolutely should NOT be used as recreational drugs.

These compounds are among many that have been created, by my group and
others, in the course of research aimed at understanding the relationship
between the chemical structure and the biological activity of substances
known as cannabinoids. The NIDA has supported my investigations in this
area almost continuously since 1984.

Cannabinoids include THC — the active ingredient in cannabis plants — but
also other substances that interact with the cannabinoid receptors in the
brain and other organs. These receptors don't exist so that people can
smoke marijuana and get high; they play a role in regulating appetite,
nausea, mood, pain and inflammation. They may be involved in the
development of conditions such as osteoporosis, liver disease and some
kinds of cancer.

Synthetic cannabinoids can help us understand these interactions, and
ultimately this knowledge may contribute to the development of new
therapies.

JWH-018 and JWH-073, and other similar compounds developed in this field
of research, have been discussed in scientific publications. Evidently
some people have figured out how to make them and are putting them in
products marketed as incense.

Again I would emphasize the risk people are taking when they smoke these
products. We simply don't know what the health effects might be.

"The Truth" is that potential long term effects have not been studied and therefore it is technically possible for there to be adverse effects that have not yet been documented.. More like stating the obvious.

I think alot of people get this but that doesnt mean that jwh and other research chemicals Do have harmful longterm effects, just that there is a possibility, in all likeliness a very slight one considering the wide recreational use. Theres a possibility i'l get hit by a car tomorrow, doesnt mean i wont leave my house. Obviously someone with reputation to consider isn't going to advocate its use on record tho.

It makes sense to think smoking fairly new chemicals could have adverse effects.  Maybe nothing will ever happen but it wouldn't suprise me if a few years down the road they link it to posible cancer.  I think marijuana is a miracle drug that it has never been linked to cancer and even having the opposite effect but i think that it is because of it's natural state. At the least,  I wouldn't expect a synthetic chemical to be as healthy as it's natural version.  :2cents:

I'm pretty sure JWH (the man) has nightmares about kids being sent to the ER for JWH (the drug) overdoses with the ER staff being completely unable to administer proper treatment because they've never heard of JWH (the drug) and have absolutely no idea what effects it has on the body and have absolutely no clue as to how to treat this dying kid.

Go ahead - stop being the Internet toughguy/drug-badass for once and imagine the sense of crushingly futile responsibility he must feel.

I'm not saying you shouldn't smoke JWH (the drug) all you like, but just so you know - a good man lies awake at night because of it.

I happen to work with NIH and just because you work somewhere doesn't mean your not privy to your own opinions. I agree i think he is tormented by it but all the same people who use JWH deserve Darwin awards. What kind of ass backwards human being ingests something they have no idea about and honestly this chemical is manufactured outside of its original recipe so to speak .... so lets be honest nobody knows what they're smoking they know its similar to JWH but theres no guaranteeing its the right thing. just like these fucking bath salts that act as cocaine or speed, im not even gonna go into whats wrong with that picture. the point is yes it gets you high like weed but guess what so does weed ... and we know alot more about safety and dosage of it

I don't think people who use JWH deserve Darwin awards. There's never been a fatality by JWH, and it gets you high like weed without getting you in trouble with drug tests. It only makes sense.

That said, you'd have nobody to blame but yourself if you wake up blind one day for no apparent reason.

The "bath salts" thing is total bullshit. MDPV and mephedrone do not act as bath salts. These "bath salts" are in the same boat as K2 and Spice, they're sold as "legal" alternatives to speed with a joke of an intended purpose on the label. Ivory Wave is no more a bath salt than K2 is an incense.

People have done enough of all of the above drugs to know about the "safe" dosage range. X-Y dosage will get you high, but don't do Z or you'll get REAL messed up. So it is for every drug under the sun. But as you yourself said, it's the long-term effects that are a mystery.

The stupidity (IMO) lies with the system that would create a market for "fake" drugs by making "real" drugs illegal. They're trading the devil you know for the devil you don't.

Not this natural vs synthetic bs again. Some synthetics are better than natural alternatives and vice versa. Just cause it comes from zee erth it doesn't mean its better than something that comes out of the test tube.

Let's try to cure cancer with AIDS!
bad analogy, lol, the devil one was better

Most people I've talked to about jwh only started using the product because of drug testing for jobs and whatnot.  I know I'm not going to put some RC in my body just because it's available, but I'm not everybody.

That's like the people that start taking some new prescription drug before they know all the side-effects, then a few years later it gets banned for causing all kinds of harm.  I know because I was one of those kids on ACCUTANE as a teen... fucked my guts up real good, and I always thought it was all the other drugs I did at a young age(mostly just LSD... lots of lsd and smoking) that toasted my insides.

And, I do understand how JWH(the man, myth, legend?) could get down on himself about all this, but that is the sacrifice scientists make sometimes.  Look at Albert Hoffman, was he trying to get tripped out and invent LSD on purpose?  No, he was researching compounds to be used for headaches or something(correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while) and some of the 26th extraction was accidentally absorbed.... Presto - cid was born.

But I'm pretty sure JWH(dude) knew what he was getting into with his career, experimenting with synthetic cannabinoids, I mean really, since 1984! Come on, what did he expect working with a chemical that mimics a known illegal drug... rats or not, they were getting them rats LIT the fuck up! lol:smile2:
