Sorry if this has already been discussed, but I can't find it on the search.  I was flipping past Inside Edition tonight and they were doing a piece on Jared Lee Laughner and how he was a salvia user.  They said his friends said that he was always smoking it.  Then of course the showed the Miley clip and talked about how the DEA considers it "a drug of concern".  They were beating the drums of salvia prohibition.

The whole criminalization of drugs is a marketing tactic. Criminal organizations want everything  to be illegal. If milk was illegal people would pay $10 a glass.

Yeah. My mother is a pretty supportive of the tea party movement, and she was all cheesed when I said that the dude was obviously only under the direction of insanity, not party rhetoric.

Then she started talking about him, "being into some bad things", and I had to explain that schizophrenics just shouldn't use drugs. A celiac shouldn't eat gluten, Dracula shouldn't touch holy water, and those with severe mental problems shouldn't use recreational drugs (let alone psychedelics).

Did it play a part in his madness? I can't honestly say that I don't think it contributed to him being bonkers. Were salvia, mushrooms, and weed to the reason he went postal? Fuck no.

Anyway, I saw one of the first releases of an interview with an aquaintance of his explaining how he, "smoked salvia and ate mushrooms", and immediately knew the stupid anti-drug bellows would be stoking the media flame.

Our society completely forgets that folks like Francis Crick were able to make amazing discoveries by opening their perspective with a little LSD, but it will dwell for ages on a Loughner engaging in salvia and shooting a member of congress.

Most criminal drug organizations want their product to stay illegal, but the real culprit is the DEA of course.  Each time they make a drug illegal, it's like a new product for them.  They produce drug arrests and the customer is the American tax payer, who buys this product out of fear.  And of course the media also sells fear with these sensational stories.
