I think no one thing can be blamed, it's a confluence of societal factors that deprived this guy of the sympathy and help he needed before he lost his shit irreversibly.

I agree that help would have been a factor that could have prevented this and that societal factors (such as the congresswoman rejecting him by not answering his nutball question) also contributed...but really can't it all be boiled down to his mental instability as being the real problem?

Well that's my point. We say he's "mentally unstable," when in fact there is something wrong enough with this society that a physically healthy human being would become so self-absorbed, violently angry, and isolated in the first place, and that this decline was never acted upon by anybody among the many who have come forward to describe his previous bizarre behavior.

I suppose we could probably also blame his parents, even though he's 22 and hasn't been in their custody for four years. They undoubtedly played the biggest role in how messed up he was though, and I haven't heard anything about them.

Just Tea Party, Sarah Palin, health insurance... :facepalm:
