what's the best smartphone on the market right now?
    #13817447 -

my old g1 died and i got a g2 to replace it. i freakin love this thing, but it was $320 and i really just bought it because i needed something ASAP. i have 20 days to return it. are there any better options out there, in terms of performance and price? i don't have a problem switching from t-mobile, the only phone i have zero interest in is the iphone.

motorola atrix

by far

its not out yet, but will be soon

id stick with tmobile, their 60$ unlimited internet, messaging, and 500 mins with free nights and weekends - all on no contract is an amazing deal.

the g2 is nice, but i would go with the mytouch 4g. very similar, but the mytouch has a better processor and more ram

.8 ghz to the mytouchs 1gzh
512 ram to the mytouch's 768.

the mytouch has a nicer UI as well.

Good points. I read on some tech blog that the g2s snapdragon processor is benchmarking just as high as the more common 1ghz chips out there, but i haven't seen that anywhere else. I'll consider the mytouch, it's actually cheaper on my plan.

I've also heard that we're about to see some new dualcore phones hit the market. If it's not going to be long, I might consider just buying a cheap POS for the time being. I don't want to regret this purchase in 3 months...

i wouldnt buy the Atrix.

the phone looks amazing, no question.

Motoblur is a killer though. i bought the moto CLIQ about a year and a half ago.. motorola basically abandoned all support for it as soon as it was launched. it took until Dec 2010 to get an update to 2.1 and its because of blur.

i wouldnt buy another motorola phone. HTC is where its at.

you'd probably want the nexus s, since it's running the native OS, but the hardware is pretty shitty for today's standards....  (no 4g, sdcard)... is disappointing...

this is actually the next android feature i'm really looking forward to... some time ago google bought out simplifymedia, which was my favorite app for the iphone (they yanked it from their app store and it ceased to function after several months, which was a big factor in me switching to android)...

of course there's orb and ampache and so on, but simplifymedia just seemed to work so much better... it also indexed on the phone, so browsing a large library felt so much more fluid.

it appears it will be integrated into the OS, so i definitely want to be able to have that version.

(After writing the post I wanted to say, I am trying to refrain from personal opinion in the post and sticking to facts. I speak from a very practical point of view. Naturally though, everything comes down to preference.)

iPhone 4 is by the best phone out, not only to superior hardware like the highest pixel per inch screen (makes a real difference), excellent camera, and no plastic, but also due to the amount of developer traction. It's not for all geeks, hobbyists, and modders, but the user base is always willing to spend money on apps, and it's not uncommon for average developers to make $30k in a day on a simple game. As a result, really great games and apps are being made for iOS. If the people can pay the bills (and then some) doing what they love and making fun games, the motivation and demand to deliver professional content is even higher. When it comes to quality software, first comes iOS and if it gets huge traction, it will eventually make an Android version (Angry birds for example). It was a long time before it was on Android though. The last statement is void, if the software isn't approved from Apple. Some of Android's best stuff alters the system core, like Swype. If Apple would approve the that kind of stuff, you can be will to be the developers would have it on there in no time and make way more money than they have off Android. Angry Birds did the same thing for example.

Look at another extremely popular program, Instagram. It got a million users the first week and is moving mountains in terms of success and connecting with it's user base. It's a household name, not on Android. Another program people love is Dropbox. It started on iOS, businesses are starting to use it, it's free and started on iOS. It may support Android now, but only after they paid their bills through the iOS community.

Of all the clients I have talked to, it's either an iPhone app or a mobile optimized web app...never is it, "can you make an Android app", and how can we make money of it. I'm not saying there isn't good software for Android. But what's out there is fragmented, certainly isn't the reason people are buying phones (apposed to iOS devices where people care more about apps than the phone itself).

So I guess it goes down to what one views as the best. I view the best as I described above, not the ability to make arbitrary "choices". (Besides, the iPhone can be hacked and modded to do whatever just like android if that's what one desires).

But here is an commonly overlooked fact. Apple is consistently rated number with service and repairs. I would never take my phone back to the carrier. I value my time which equates to money and if something were to happen to my phone, Apple would fix it in the store, no problem (assuming it wasn't physical damage.) All carriers suck and would give some sort of run around...not to mention the miserable (and long) experience going into a wireless store. The apple store didn't try to sell me bullshit upgrades or talk me into a higher plan, cause they don't care. They sell and support the phone, the opposite of other carriers (except maybe RIM).

Verizon tries to support all the phones and add their crapware and often times 6 months after their latest flavor is released, they are on the next big thing and don't even continue to support the unit. If you hack the phone and have the time and know how, sure you can get around it, but this isn't an acceptable solutions or market strategy. Then take into consideration that every manufacturer adds their own layer of crap in the mix. The play on the buzz word 'Open' but really motorola, htc, and samsung offer a real different experience with their own crap you can't delete. Samsung phones are officially only supporting Android 2.1 (isn't 2.3 almost here) for whatever reason. Unless you are skillful enough, willing, and enjoy de-fragmenting the system themselves, Android isn't worth buying unless it's a Nexus flavor.

But even then there are issues. The buttons the nexus phones aren't even consistent. The menu buttons need to go. Perhaps this is a preference, but it's not a standard to keep buttons in a specific order thus rendering then arbitrary from a design perspective. The raw Android isn't too bad, but Google doesn't use hardware acceleration and the scrolling and animations really aren't that good, among other things. The software really does have potential, but the Nexus line has inferior hardware. From the reviews I read, people enjoy other phones more. The whole 'open' thing is a ploy and is hurting the community as a whole.

iPhone and iOS aside, they are the ones with the most traction. Windows Phone 7 is promising, and I can't wait to see what Palm has to offer. As a developer this feels like a new frontier everyday and I am willing to get any platform the makes me money.

I like the Widgets that android has, as opposed to the shortcut like apps on the iPhone. I like being able to install custom roms. And I love being able to run Orbot, OtRChat. And Apg, although I'm not sure if iOS has a gpg client although it probably does. I think android multitasks extrememly well. And I like the fact that its open source.

I think its going to gain a lot of speed as well. Its still very new.

i bought my first Android phone in Oct 08..

with the speed at which open source development works, that is an eternity ago.

it is definitely mature at this point.

BlackBerries have whole device encryption.
New precedents allow police to search your phone while under arrest.
Phones are making major news as a source of drastic privacy breach.
I would not consider any device that doesn't allow me to encrypt everything.
That reduces the choices to BlackBerries and therefore, for me, makes them the best smartphone on the market right now.

The only thing I've seen done on another platform that I've yet to see done on a BB was the whole hotspot trick an Android can pull off once it has been hacked to pieces. Pretty neat trick.

The reason apps come to iOS first (or did at any rate) is because it was the dominant platform.  Android has I believe a larger user base now, and most analysts think it will only grow larger.  I think eventually Android will get apps first.  That said I actually like Windows Phone 7, the look of it is real unique.  Android is pretty blah looking to me.  However it's unclear if Windows will gain enough market share to make it worth going with at this point.

I'm waiting for the HTC Thunderbolt personally.  4G LTE ftw.  If Verizon had got the iPhone like 4 months ago, I may have gone with the iPhone 4.  But with 4G LTE so close, I see no reason investing in anything slower.  I like that Android is open source and runs Java.

Although, security on ALL smartphones still worries me.  I won't be doing any online banking, for example, from my phone.
