I think part of the N1's poor sales has to do with the network.  T-Mobile's 3G coverage is awful, even compared to AT&T.  I suspect sales will probably pick up greatly once it's released on Verizon.  I suspect that's a big reason why Apple's getting so litigious.  Then again, I've also heard that it's a battery hog, and that the tech support is notoriously bad(then again, that never stopped Microsoft).

noticed palm pre plus for verizon was $30 on amazon w/ contract.... seems like decent phone @ price w/ some novel features.... can use phone as a wifi hotspot for up to 5 wireless devices.... might be worth considering if you're on a budget.

interesting thread. nice to see that there are a lot of people who are keeping a close eye with what's going on in the mobile industry.

i have an N900 and i wouldn't necessarily classify myself within the "geek coder" type of market group. hands down it has the best native browser than any android phone out on the market and against the iphone. i found that after trying out several android phones, when it comes to multitasking, the N900 is much better. At most i've had up to 8 browser windows open, phone, a couple of instant messaging windows, calendar, media player and calculator all running simultaneously and didn't suffer from any lag. Everything was running smoothly and switching between apps wasn't a problem. Video calling through gtalk is also pretty good. I hadn't used video calling through Skype or Gtalk before but with this device I've started to get the hang of it and use it quite often.

Calling people via SkypeOut and Gtalk is also pretty handy since my service provider allows for it with my data coverage and also whenever I'm using wifi I just end up using these particular services to call people. I think it makes it much easier to use these particular services since it's integrated into the Phone and Conversations applications. You can also download several plugins for other services such as GaduGadu, SIP, AOL IM and even IRC (for conversations only) so that it's fully integrated into these 2 applications. IMO, the user experience of having it integrated with the phone services is much better than downloading the apps separately and having to load them up individually.

the downside of this phone is the google calendar support (though there are 3rd party developers working on this issue and i believe there's a plugin for this in the application manager), email could be much better (i think it's much better on android) and Ovi maps just fucking sucks. Though, you can download maps for each continent onto the hd and use it without having to be connected to Ovi services. It seems that Ovi maps really just supports Symbian phones more but who knows, maybe in the future they'll take into consideration Maemo 5/Meego.

3rd party apps are also a bit annoying due to the inconsistency in the UIs. There will be more apps available in due time, when Ovi services starts to pick up. 3rd party developers should be already switching from GTK to QT now, getting their apps ready for any future releases of Maemo 6/Meego. But, the good thing about the 3rd party apps is the quality - there aren't any iFart or iwhateverthefuckretarded apps in the repositories.

now that Nokia is switching to QT, you're going to find much better support if you're a developer and what's good about this is that your apps will be usable on both Maemo6/Meego/Symbian. I don't really follow symbian phones but from the looks of it, symbian 3 and 4 are shaping up quite nicely. Nokia has already announced that with top of the line phones/notebooks, Meego/maemo 6 will be the platform of choice and with mid range smartphones, symbian will be the os. although ovi services sucks big balls right now, it's shaping up and would be a force to reckon with later on (in my opinion).

if anyone does end up getting the n900, consider that it's pretty data intensive. get yourself an unlimited 3g data package cause trust me, you'll be using instant messaging and using the browser quite frequently. i'd have to say that this device has transformed my life in a way, where i'm ALWAYS connected. I'm not sure how to feel about that. When I travel in the car or in public transport, instead of just listening to music, I'm always browsing and chatting at the same time.

anyways, my 2 cents.

I use a BlackBerry Tour.  Thank god my company pays the $160/month unlimited phone/data bill.

I thought I would use it a lot more than I do.
-Pandora while on the road is great.  But I'm not on the road that much.
-having services like Yelp available on the fly is nice, but I typically make plans BEFORE I'm out, so the computer is easier
-Email is a necessity for my job so it DOES come in very handy for that, although I get the same sick feeling as many, that I cannot detach from my job as a result of having it on me all the time.

I honestly fear the SmartPhone.  They have cameras you can't disable, microphones you can't turn off.  AT&T already has shown that they will bend over for any government agency and intrude on your privacy without fear of reprimand.  Fuck.

$160 seems pretty high.  I pay about half that...  But like you said, you're not paying it so who cares.

That's not even an issue with only smart phones, but just about every phone these days.  Except maybe on phones which use an open enough operating system where you can monitor the devices and they are independent of the cellular functionality.  At least that way they would kind of have to hack you to install monitoring software and you could perhaps detect it if they did do so...

True, the only difference is that I don't browse the web or install apps with my phone, but with the SmartPhone I do.  This just increases the opportunity for security compromises & risks essentially.

What bothers me is that these cell phone manufacturers are FAILING to design these things in a security-conscious fashion.  They are BLATANTLY disregarding what the past 20 years have taught us about the damage that can be caused by malware.  I haven't seen much if any effort toward giving us ways to help us maintain security, either, except for some security setting preferences when you install an app, most of which seem to require uncomfortable levels of access to work properly.

The cell phone industry would probably rather have you assume that their devices are inherently secure (the way most do already) because then they don't need to invest any effort into it.  Security is something you can only sell once there is a catastrophe, and it certainly won't be as lucrative as the phones and services themselves right now.

Some genius hackers need to make a move on this and bring the cellular world to a crawl or something, so people wake up and start demanding better security.

The services and manufacturers in the mainstream market are pitiful.

IDK whether you really need to fear it.

Everything for iPhone gets vetted by Apple first, and Android phones have a pretty tight security system - if your app doesn't have permissions to do something, then it just can't - and you are warned about all these permissions before installing, so if you don't trust it 100% don't use it, and apps can't access each others private files.

The fact there hasn't been a virus, IMO, isn't that the hackers haven't 'moved on this', it's that you can't really do any real damage...

I don't know about Blackberry, but I would assume there's something similar?

Also, what the deuce do you get for $160/month? Is that some kind of unlimited-calls-anywhere-in-the-world deal? I pay (the equivalent of) $45, and get unlimited internet (which I can use for tethering), texts and calls...

You are sadly wrong.

There is already a plethora of spyware software which have "features such as live-call listening, secret mobile GPS tracking, SMS message reading, phone call history, email, and the ability to secretly listen in on the phone's surroundings."  You can do your Google homework if you don't believe me.

This sort of naivety is a perfect example of the largely uninformed majority, exactly which allows this situation to continue.  Don't just bury your head in the sand.  The reality is all governments have no desire to fix this problem or to make these products illegal. The more they can find out about you the better protected they feel.

Uninformed majority? I am a software developer for Android.

There is nothing on Android, unfortunately, which can listen in to calls successfully.

An application needs specific permissions, you would get a warning if you installed something like that which said it uses the microphone, the internet, GPS, access call history, access SMS, access Google Account.

And if you think you are installing some crappo-game, then eyebrows should be raised, and you don't install. It gets reported to Google, they check over it, and remove from Market, ban the developer.

I was speaking for my platform only, I never said I knew about Blackberry, I only assumed it had similar security precautions.

You're drinking the koolaid, then.

Do your homework like I said, fool.  Droid is no exception.  Do you think the average person cares about permissions or is educated enough to understand what they're doing?  They're not.  People don't read EULA agreements.  They click NEXT NEXT NEXT FINISH and if it doesn't work, they will do whatever it takes.

Read this on how easy it was to create an 8,000 user mobile botnet http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=5681

Touché.

Though, the average person doesn't download from SlideMe. And you would quickly get reported for having suspiciously over-permissive applications on the real marketplace. And yeah, I know people who have Android's that don't know jack about there phones, but always read the permissions, so I'd say the average person does care.

Why would someone want your list of phone numbers? Unless they knew you personally, it doesn't really mean shit, bashing in a random 11-digit number will get you on the phone with someone just as meaningless... Same with SMS messages, does it matter? I wouldn't care if some stranger saw my inbox.

The difference between a 'virus' on your phone and on your computer, is that it can't self-replicate, or do any of that nasty stuff. Open up the task manager, ask yourself why 'XXX' is still running when you're not using it, close it, uninstall...

The problem is not collecting data off the phone... it's having the ability to control the hardware unbeknown to you.  You're walking around with a camera & microphone afterall.

There was an article about this woman who had this stalker who installed this type of software on her smart phone and harassed her for like two years, always knew where she was somehow (GPS), who she was talking to, conversations being had in the room she was in, etc..  The phone was basically a walking bug and she had no clue.  Even the service provider didn't catch it when she brought it to them to have her phone # changed X number of times.  This might be rare but that doesn't mean it isn't happening already, nor that it's an acceptable risk.

Human beings kill for control over others, and this is the sort of thing dominant freaks would love to add to their arsenal.

there is actually several keylogger apps for the iphone.  one of them is advertized to be used to see if people are snooping your phone.  on the flip side, its your phone, u should know whats what on it.

A simple hardware controlled led that shows when the camera/mic/gps is on would solve all your problems. Most laptops have this for the webcam.

It's an acceptable risk for me since I know what I install on my phone.

Some people don't carry their phones on them 24/7 though, and don't think of doing so as a means of security if they do.  Honestly, the only person I would worry about doing this is some psycho stalker girlfriend.  I'm not going to take my phone with me into the shower.  I guess a keylock is a good deterrent though.

Significant others spy on each other ALL THE TIME trying to find out if they're being cheated on.  This is probably one of its driving markets.
