I find the android OS to feel much less finished than Maemo.  There are some aspects of maemo that are mysterious at first, like tapping in empty areas to do things, but you figure these things out in about 5 minutes of working with the device and I've come to appreciate them since.  "Unfinished" to me would imply inconsistency in design or interface, and I can't think of anywhere I've noticed this in maemo. 

And the n900 has a great gps chip that works well and fast.  It's assisted by the network but that only makes it faster and better.  It can still work without it.  I've taken it up in the mountains way out of cell tower range and it still works perfectly.  Also, with Ovi maps you can pre-load areas of maps making what I just described possible.

Yea you're right, I was thinking of a different phone as far as gps goes.  Id have to use the phone more to make a more informed decision, the few times I tried it though I wasn't terribly impressed.  Ill check it out in more detail later as Im going to be getting a new phone in a month or so

Haha, the whole jailbreak thing is a joke. It's a noobphone by default and they don't even make it easy to access more "advanced" functions like video recording :crazy:

video recording is available on the new 3gs by default. actually the video recording API was available since the 3.0 SDK IIRC but as it was an undocumented API apple would refuse any app submitted that used it... yeah it's bullshit, but then again there's cycorder on cydia for a long time. you'll only get trapped on job's ass if you want to :laugh:

the api was available with the 3.0 sdk but the hardware was fully capable of doing it the whole time.

apple actively withholds features from you just to get you to buy the next version. i have a HUGE problem with that.. among many other things..

I've been looking up the N900 specs, and it looks like it's a great "geek" phone, but doesn't have as much to offer for the standard user who can't write code(i.e. me).  Kind of like Linux.  It seems to me like Android OS occupies a nice middle ground between the "geeky" features of the very open, programmable Maemo and the "noob" friendliness of the iPhone.

Yes, I know. I'm very unreasonable when talking about Apple products.

The only think that is missing on my Android is multi-touch. My HTC magic hardware is capable of multi touch, but Android 1.6 does not support it. The new Android should support it.
Does anyone know if it is true that Apple patents prevented Android multi-touch? That would even give me more reason to hate Apple.

Whatever they prevented, it didn't prevent Apple from suing.  Interesting that they chose to target HTC and not Google, even though many of their complaints are software-related.  Maybe they don't want to pick on someone their own size?

yeah i did see about that lawsuit. im sure the reason they are suing HTC and not google has something to do with Eric Schmidt (formerly) sitting on the Apple board of directors. its a pretty ridiculous lawsuit.. just more evidence that the patent system is fucked. :shrug:

as for the multitouch on Android.. ive never seen the advantage. there are buttons to zoom if i need to. not having it doesnt take anything away from my experience. just always seemed like a gimmick to me..

yeah i agree with this. i LOVE maemo because i can tear it apart and do whatever i want with it. however, at the end of the day, i want a working phone more than anything else. i dont mind if i break something with the n810 cause thats just a toy.. maemo works fine for me 95% of the time. thats not good enough for a phone. my phone needs to work perfectly every time i pick it up.

i love the n900 hardware too.. just wish it ran Android..

For me, the N900 just isn't popular enough to have enough apps, so that puts me off.

The lawsuit has come out because Apple is frightened that Android is going to piss all over them in the future. There have been plenty of well-respected reports, including one from Gartner (technology analyst) that says Android will be more popular by 2012.

There's 99% chance that we will see nothing change, and it will end up with some back-room exchange of money.

It's a panic reflex :smile:

There's no doubting iPhone as by far better quality apps and games than Android. If apple change their ways, make things more Android-esque (ship it 'jailbroken'), they stand a chance of staying the most popular.

i believe that with the popularity (and ad campaign) of the Droid, there are currently more Android based phones out there than iPhones.

it will be a cold day in hell when Apple releases control of anything.

and i dont think the iPhone has better quality apps. they def have more apps but the quality is about the same.

Interesting. I don't think that's the case outside of the US, I only know 1 person with an Android phone, and several with iPhones.

You can't deny that the quality, or atleast level of detail, in games is far greater on iPhone. Even the small, cheaper games have decent 3D graphics, and good physics - whereas (my games excluded :tongue:) - there is some crap on Android...

Things are creeping in though, the new Raging Thunder 2 game for example, looks and plays brilliantly.

I don't know about that.  The entirety of the Debian repositories are installable on the n900.

I think when Nokia finally gets MeeGo up and running itll be very interesting.  Nexus One was just released for ATT, so now ATT has a strong Android product.  I bet Apple isn't too happy about that, though the N1 has been a flop so far in terms of sales.
