So, I figured I'd make this thread to talk about smartphones, and what the best one on the market is.  Obviously, the top contender to beat is the iPhone, but Google seems poised to pose a major challenge.

I'm thinking about getting a smartphone by the end of the year, but I'm kind of torn on what to get.  Apple will be making a big announcement in June, and there are rumors that part of it may entail the end of their exclusivity contract with AT&T.  If it becomes available on Verizon, I may end up deciding to get one.

On the other hand, I've been checking out the new Nexus One from Google, which is currently available on T-Mobile or AT&T networks, but will soon be available on Verizon and other networks.  From what I've read, it runs faster than the iPhone, and avoids a lot of the proprietary bullshit that Apple is famous for.  On the other hand, Google tech support is way behind Apple, and with anything as new on the market as this, there's bound to be some bugs that need to be worked out.  Also, the Android Market clearly trails behind the iTunes App Store, though that may change as more Android users come onto the market.

I've heard some good things about the PalmPre and webOS, but I have no plans on switching to Sprint, so that's pretty much a non-starter for me.

So, who here uses some sort of smartphone?  What are your thoughts on Android vs. webOS vs. iPhone OS?  Which do you find has better functionality?  Which is the better deal?

well, if your primary concern is the network, i think you should hold off and wait for the nexus one to be released for verizon (the current one only works on at&t's edge network btw, no 3g)...  i think it's rumored to be released for verizon at the end of march.  i wouldn't bank on apple opening its doors to verizon, if anything, i imagine in june there may be a new version of the iphone.  but if you have no plans to jump in and get one, i guess you'll find out then.
i have an iphone, which i'm generally happy w/, but at&t's network really isn't much of a setback for me since i live in a big city and pretty much travel exclusively to other cities that have 3g coverage w/ at&t.  i think if i flew less and made more road trips i might feel differently.  if the nexus one had been available (especially on verizon) at the time i purchased my iphone, i would have undoubtably went w/ it instead.... looks like a great phone.

i have a droid eris and am pretty content for now. i have several friends with iphones and they are nice, but last gen processors and shitty network right now. i've also been interested in the nexus one coming to verizon, the 1ghz processor and 512 megs of ram are what draw me in, also the larger resolution is nice. i'm planning on waiting though, as theres been a lot of talk of dual core snapdragon processors being available in phones by the end of the year, and i find that the 256 megs of ram in most phones simply isnt enough.. and i've read android will be dominant over the iphone app market by 2012. i've also read about the motorola shadow (?) to be released by the end of the year with hdmi out and full 1080 video support. theres just so much going on with android right now, this is really the year to get into it. htc has a few phones coming out in upcoming months with some nice specs as well, and i'm an htc fan overall.

i guess it comes down to where you live.. if you have a shitty at&t area forget the iphone. me being an android fan though i'd say keep an eye on upcoming android phones, killer hardware, always advancing os. i'm using a cheaper phone with dated hardware and it does me pretty well, would be perfect with a better processor and more ram. people think the iphones look better with their 24bit color depth as opposed to the 16bit on other phones, though i cant say i really notice a difference.

256 mb ram not enough? What are you doing with your phone to go over 256 mb?

I have a HTC magic. Very happy with it. I never buy Apple because I don't like their business model so I can't compare. I like that the magic has 6 physical buttons and a scrollball.

It syncs very well with google products like gmail, contacts, calendar and tasks. The camera is crappy.

Some good GPS apps for Android are OruxMaps, My Tracks, MapDroyd and Google Maps.

I'm actually an Android programmer, ever since I got my HTC Magic I fell in love.


Google are sending me a free Nexus One this week (they're sending a free NexusOne or Motorola Droid to the top ~5000 developers on the market...)



But aside from my obviously biased opinion, iPhones are big, chunky, expensive, have a low res screen, and can't even do simple things that Android users take for granted (unless you jailbreak it, but that's necessarily painful)

AdMob's stats say that this month will be the first month that number of android users > iPhone users... and it has been rising exponentially since it started. The iPhone is way too limited to keep up




- I don't know too much about networks in the US, but the Nexus One is definitely the phone to get if you want a touch-keyboard. Personally, I don't like the hardware keyboards of Droid, makes the thing too big and heavy.

A jailbroken iPhone can't be touched by any smart phone currently available.  I own a iPhone, Nexus One, Motorola Droid, and a HTC Touch Pro.  I've tried time and time again to find a phone that even comes close to delivering the experience I get from my iPhone.

I even find ATT's network to be more the satisfactory!  I've never had a dropped call, and coverage for me has been spot on.

I'm able to download any application in the AppStore for a free "evaluation".  ;-)  Your able to install 10's of thousands of applications, themes, ringtones, and much more from individuals that otherwise wouldn't be possible with a stock phone.  It makes for a fantastic music player, and browsing the web is like no other phone I've ever had the chance to use.

I'm by no means a MAC fanboy, and to be frank I wish some cell manufacturer would step up to the plate and make me want to put it down.  I've tried numerous time over the past three years and have always come back to the iPhone.

Android has been out for a year and a half.. not that new. i bought a G1 when it first came out and it was a little rough initially but now its solid. currently i have a Moto CLIQ and its damn near perfect.

i really dont like the iphone at all. its insanely locked down by apple. no multitasking is retarded.. theres no reason for that. the iphone is just really inflexible in comparison to android.

the Nexus One looks really nice.. personally i prefer to have a physical keyboard but whatevs..

I own an HTC hero and like it (Verizon has the Eris).

You should consider what you will actually use the phone for.  Primarily music?  email, scheduling etc?

Another major consideration is whether or not you need an actual keyboard (a hard keyboard) or whether an onscreen keyboard (a "soft" keyboard) will work.  Personally, I am o.k. with a soft keyboard.  However, when I'm actually "working", I do prefer the physical keys on my blackberry.

Cost is something else to think about.  The iphone's prices are relatively high.

I wouldn't get too caught up in "apps".  The major ones are probably available for both platforms.

If the main benefit from jailbreaking, is that you can install applications that haven't been through Apples vetting garbage, then it doesn't seem that great.

The Android marketplace doesn't have the delay between releasing an app and having it appear on the phones, you can have anything on there, and you can install your 'evaluation' software (being a mobile game developer though pirated software pisses me right off) without having to modify anything...

It sounds like all iPhones should come 'jailbroken' by default!

The main benefit is free apps.

You can also have custom themes etc.  I think it's pretty important because without it, all iphones look identical:  boring rows of sqaures to represent apps.  Androids "widgets" are far superior IMO.

Not to mention, you can write an Android app that acts as a home screen, so technically, can be whatever you want :smile:

Well so far nobody has mentioned the Nokia n900.  I'm going to have to say it kicks an iphone's ass.  I don't have much experience with the other phones, but I've used a few Androids and they were all slightly disappointing.  The n900 is a beast and is really unmatched right now.

I wouldn't count on the iphone coming to verizon, it's been rumored to be coming to verizon in 'a few months' for the past several years.  Personally I find the iphone over rated much like their desktop operating system.  No multitasking on the iphone?  How is that not a major problem to people?  It is very easy to use and is meant to be easy to use, personally I like digging into an OS and having control of the OS.  I find Apple to be a domineering controlling company that I just can't support.  Android for me

Oh and if you want an easier to use phone that is still Android, get the new HTC phone coming out in a bit with their 'Sense' software on top of it.  It completely changes the main user interface and is much easier and more straightforward to use.  It's neat, though I like the hard straight google approach myself.  Verizon is going to be getting the Nexus one which is straight android, and then around the same time the HTC Sense phone.  The sense HTC phone is called the HTC Incredible

The Nokia n900 is a beast. It also costs almost twice as much as my HTC magic and is 0.5cm thicker. Definitely a good smartphone and kicks iphone's ass.

Ah the N900, decent phone, Ive used it a bit.  I think one day Nokia will be able to compete with apple and google, but presently their OS feels unfinished.  Some of their design choices are baffling to me like the unclear nature of how to manuever around the OS, tapping blank areas to go back and etc..  Also no GPS, they use AGPS if I recall. Just seemed like a less interesting and unpolished android.  Though the next few iterations of their OS might make it competitive.  Ultimately phones come down to what a user likes though, so one needs to really try them all.  For me google is the clear winner, though I have issues with them also

yeah nokia will never be very popular as long as they continue to sell their phones at insanely high prices. and dont get me wrong.. i have an n810 and i love it. maemo is rad. most people cannot justify that cost though.

Android is where its at.

Assisted GPS is GPS in combination with some extra information, mainly orbit data, for faster startup. The Nokia n900 has a GPS receiver and is a good GPS device.
