Question for all you drummers out there
    #13813788 -

What intervals do you like to tune your Tom drums to? Do you tune your snare and bass drum in relation to them?

I tune all the drums together--the bass is always the lowest, the snare the highest (w/ snares off of course, and the toms in between.

I don't tune the toms at intervals, I just kind of tune them by ear. If you have a soft mallet, that helps because you can hear the resonation much clearer and longer than with a stick.

What kind of kit do you have?

depends what style im playing. Usually i dont worry about the actual chromatic notes but i have two toms and tune them like a 1st and a 5th when i want to, but really just use you ear and adapt to the people your playing with.

Yeah I've been thinking of tuning the toms in a basic major arpeggio. Like 1st, 3rd, and 5th.

I was thinking maybe doing the snare as a high 7th. And maybe the kick drum as a 1st but dropped an octave to contrast with my highest tom, so if I do a descending roll on my toms and end with my kick, it'll descend an octave.

Just trying to get some ideas of what to try.

Yeah just play with em, you'll find something that works....for now:lol:. I find myself experimenting a lot when i'm playing by myself.

What styles of music are most comfortable with?

You could call me a "jungle" drummer. I like to play lots of fast breaks. Hoping to do a one man Live PA someday soon :yesnod:

But honestly I'll play anything. Me and my friends play around in lots of different genres. I just try to hold it down the best I can

Also, do you tune your resonant head a pitch lower than your batter head?

If so, how much lower of a pitch do you tune it? A half step? A whole step?

I always tune my resonant side tighter. But I have larger drums so it helps to move the air around. Definitely a whole step.

This is an interesting video to watch. He starts talking about tuning about half way through.

On my snare i do. For my toms im not really sure, i usually take the whole tom off the stand and find the note i want then try to get it there by tightening/loosening the batter and resonant heads while tapping the batter until i get the note and then work on getting it clear.

Another way to do it is to find out what frequency your drums ring at naturally by using your voice(it might feel weird doing this). Just hum different pitches into what ever drum you are tuning and you'll know when youve found it because you will feel the vibrations. Then all thats left to do is keep that note in your head and tune to it.

That's odd. I've always heard of tuning the resonant side a little lower, and have the batter side on pitch. So you prefer having the resonant a pitch higher rather than lower? Have you compared how the two different ways sound?

Haha it really is.
As for "jungle drummer", some big inspirations for me have been Jojo Mayer, and KJ Sawka. Here's a video of KJ Sawka to give you an idea:

Cool, I know exactly what you mean. Back when I was a timpanist I would tune my timpani's this way.

From experience, drummers tend to be better composers than guitarists :hehehe:

I'd play drums if I had the money to buy a set and a good place to play em.

Re: Question for all you drummers out there [Re: Acaterpillar]

I play open handed(do not cross arms for the high hat/snare) and with a pistol grip and that is all I know. The things you all are talking about never occurred to me. I play by ear with a natural sense of rhythm and timing. I have not learned to read music sheets for drums. I tune my drums how they sound good to me. I like hydraulic heads. That is about as technical as I get. I am not a professional player for money though. My only claim to almost fame is that I hung out with the Toadies before they got started and did not try out for them when asked.

My dream set would be a birch wood Yamaha studio set with wood rims etc...I like Sabian and Zyldjian cymbals. I use 5a-7a or b sticks. I would love to get a second snare and a double kick pedal(not a bass)as this seems more effective for space issues. I have a 5 piece Tama swingstar that is 6 years old.

EDIT: I have the best set I have ever had and the perfect place to play(you could turn the amps to 11 here with no prob)and no one to play with now.
