Golden oyster mushroom grow
    #13787775 -

Hey gang,

I will be using a coir and hpoo substrate bag with a rye berry jar. I read that coir is good to use for wood loving mushrooms. So i was thinking about using the coir and hpoo mixture layered with the rye berries in an aluminum pan with a plastic bag liner.

I ordered a LC syringe the other day and hope to knock up the jars soon.

A question on hpoo, i have 2 lbs worth of straw like hpoo. its pictured below. what besides pasteurization do i need to do with this poo? It doesnt look like the poo in the videos. It has some moisture in it but no ammonia smell.

Can this be used in a pinch? I dont have access to any pasture manure yet.

Oysters don't care for hpoo or coir. You'd have better luck with plain ol cardboard or old paper!

Are manure and coir fairly abundant for you?  I only ask because oysters will probably do better on lots of other materials that are often fairly abundant.  Coffee grounds work quite well and of course for oysters fresh straw works amazingly well and is usually really cheap.  I bet oysters would grow on the stuff in your pictures and maybe it would be awesome but it may be better to reserve your hpoo for species that are more choosey about it like agaricus or panaeolus or something like that.  Up to you really.  If you want to use that compost then I would just pasteurize it in a bag of some kind so you can really squeeze all the excess moisture out.  Then mix it with the spawn in whatever container you want.  I've never seen any advantage to layering so I mix as well as possible without crushing the grain.  I think in general you will find your approach more appropriate for actives.  Not that it won't work but you will probably want to think bigger since it takes a nice pile of edibles to make a good meal.  And some of the materials like coir and vermiculite aren't really as useful for edibles though some seem to use them with plenty of success.

Ok i found a bag of wheat straw for sale. Its cut up into 2 inch pieces which should work i hope for a substrate. Ill run by starbucks and grab some coffee grounds.

think i will go watch RR's videos on straw. I just love his way of teaching mycology.

I noticed he just adds soapy water and hydrated lime to his straw.
RR didnt use any coffee grounds for his oysters, So i will follow his example and see if they will grow for me in log form.

The oysters looked much better outside in his video, i live in an apartment with a small porch. I have a strip of dirt to call my own and it gets morning to noon sun then shade the rest of the day.

I am thinking this might be a good place to try and grow them. I am unsure as to how to keep the straw substrate moist though. do i pour water on it or mist like indoors?

I have a question about poly tubing, which thickness am i looking for? would a 3 mil poly tubing roll thats 12 inches wide be fine for small straw logs?

Pure straw works great.  I think the 12 inch is a good size but I've never done plastic tubes so I'm not too sure.

awesome thanks Im still deciding if i want to make a log. the poly is a little pricey for my budget.

When i get the culture in I'll knock up a few quart jars and that will give me plenty of time to decide.

Do trays work for straw or basically is it a basket or log type deal?
I have 10 large spawn bags but im unsure if they will work for this application.

I didnt want to buy the poly tubes either so I used a milk crate and a plastic bag.

OOO i have a milk crate just getting in the way and a bed in a bag i could enclose it in. the clear bag should be the right size.

Thanks for the idea! you rock!

Yeah, pure straw works good, coffee adds nutrients but also raises the risk of contamination.
You can use plain gallon sized bags, milk crates, old laundry baskets, large buckets with holes cut on them etc.
It would be best to fruit it outside, oysters need ridiculous amounts of fresh air and light, and the spores they release can be harmful. If you have a large enough substrate (in a bucket or a basket), and you don't live in a desert area, you can fruit it as is. Or you can make a makeshift humidity tent, make a wire frame larger than the substrate and cover it with plastic sheathing (slash it in many places to let the fresh air in while still maintaining high humidity).

It's currently 59 degrees outside, but it gets beyond hot in the summer so im thinking i can sneak in a grow this spring before it gets really hot. I live in the southern united states so it gets humid here often.

I am hoping a clear bed in a bag cover will work if i slash the hell outta it for FAE.

Im going to try growing in a milk crate, i have one kilo of wheat straw cut up into 2 inch pieces. I am hoping thats enough.

Thank you so much for the information. This will all come in so handy as i am still waiting on the LC to come in.

Ok so the plan is to knock up some rye berries then layer it with the straw using RR's Tek.

Are syringes good to work with or should i try and convert it to a live culture first?

never mind the syringe i bought is a culture syringe so should be good to go!

I am going to follow RR's straw tek to the letter with one exception ill be growing in a square plastic milk crate. RR's videos say its alright to use different baskets.

I still have to colonize my rye berries, i think ill do four quarts just to be safe.

Ok i received my culture syringe and knocked up four rye berry quart jars. I used 1 cc per jar, is that enough?
