Golden oyster mushroom grow
    #13787775 -

Hey gang,

I will be using a coir and hpoo substrate bag with a rye berry jar. I read that coir is good to use for wood loving mushrooms. So i was thinking about using the coir and hpoo mixture layered with the rye berries in an aluminum pan with a plastic bag liner.

I ordered a LC syringe the other day and hope to knock up the jars soon.

A question on hpoo, i have 2 lbs worth of straw like hpoo. its pictured below. what besides pasteurization do i need to do with this poo? It doesnt look like the poo in the videos. It has some moisture in it but no ammonia smell.

Can this be used in a pinch? I dont have access to any pasture manure yet.

Oysters don't care for hpoo or coir. You'd have better luck with plain ol cardboard or old paper!

Are manure and coir fairly abundant for you?  I only ask because oysters will probably do better on lots of other materials that are often fairly abundant.  Coffee grounds work quite well and of course for oysters fresh straw works amazingly well and is usually really cheap.  I bet oysters would grow on the stuff in your pictures and maybe it would be awesome but it may be better to reserve your hpoo for species that are more choosey about it like agaricus or panaeolus or something like that.  Up to you really.  If you want to use that compost then I would just pasteurize it in a bag of some kind so you can really squeeze all the excess moisture out.  Then mix it with the spawn in whatever container you want.  I've never seen any advantage to layering so I mix as well as possible without crushing the grain.  I think in general you will find your approach more appropriate for actives.  Not that it won't work but you will probably want to think bigger since it takes a nice pile of edibles to make a good meal.  And some of the materials like coir and vermiculite aren't really as useful for edibles though some seem to use them with plenty of success.

Ok i found a bag of wheat straw for sale. Its cut up into 2 inch pieces which should work i hope for a substrate. Ill run by starbucks and grab some coffee grounds.

think i will go watch RR's videos on straw. I just love his way of teaching mycology.

I noticed he just adds soapy water and hydrated lime to his straw.
RR didnt use any coffee grounds for his oysters, So i will follow his example and see if they will grow for me in log form.

The oysters looked much better outside in his video, i live in an apartment with a small porch. I have a strip of dirt to call my own and it gets morning to noon sun then shade the rest of the day.

I am thinking this might be a good place to try and grow them. I am unsure as to how to keep the straw substrate moist though. do i pour water on it or mist like indoors?

Pure straw works great.  I think the 12 inch is a good size but I've never done plastic tubes so I'm not too sure.

awesome thanks Im still deciding if i want to make a log. the poly is a little pricey for my budget.

When i get the culture in I'll knock up a few quart jars and that will give me plenty of time to decide.

Do trays work for straw or basically is it a basket or log type deal?
I have 10 large spawn bags but im unsure if they will work for this application.

Yeah, pure straw works good, coffee adds nutrients but also raises the risk of contamination.
You can use plain gallon sized bags, milk crates, old laundry baskets, large buckets with holes cut on them etc.
It would be best to fruit it outside, oysters need ridiculous amounts of fresh air and light, and the spores they release can be harmful. If you have a large enough substrate (in a bucket or a basket), and you don't live in a desert area, you can fruit it as is. Or you can make a makeshift humidity tent, make a wire frame larger than the substrate and cover it with plastic sheathing (slash it in many places to let the fresh air in while still maintaining high humidity).

It's currently 59 degrees outside, but it gets beyond hot in the summer so im thinking i can sneak in a grow this spring before it gets really hot. I live in the southern united states so it gets humid here often.

I am hoping a clear bed in a bag cover will work if i slash the hell outta it for FAE.

Im going to try growing in a milk crate, i have one kilo of wheat straw cut up into 2 inch pieces. I am hoping thats enough.

Thank you so much for the information. This will all come in so handy as i am still waiting on the LC to come in.

never mind the syringe i bought is a culture syringe so should be good to go!

I am going to follow RR's straw tek to the letter with one exception ill be growing in a square plastic milk crate. RR's videos say its alright to use different baskets.

I still have to colonize my rye berries, i think ill do four quarts just to be safe.

I made a LC using a microwave tek i read on here. I had a couple cc's left of golden mushroom lc left and wanted to make more. I used two layers of tyvek as a lid and held that in place with a rubber band.

It was boiled twice and allowed to cool over night, Then i placed a home made lid on the LC and injected it with 2 ccs of LC.

Here is some daily shots

Good luck on your grow man!
If you have some old cardboard and paper waste laying around, you can use that. You put it to good use, recycle, and get away without paying for substrate, it's a win-win! You have enough jars, make some strw bags, some cardboard and see how they compare!
I'll start some golden oysters on cardboard later in the spring, they are one of the rare species resistant to high temps.
Btw, you might find wheat straw in pet shop as rabbit bedding, it's usually relatively expensive, but is probably worth it seeing you don't need much.

ok so as long as its straw the type isnt a problem? I see rabbit straw is alfalfa straw, will that matter at all?

I like the cardboard idea. I was stripping some small squares the other day to test. I Always seem to have a boxes or two laying around that i can recycle.

I am way to cheap to buy poly tubing, so I will have to figure out another kind of bag. Any ideas?

My plan is to soapy up some water, then sink the bag in the tub in tub and soak that for 2 hours. Then drain the water out and add a large stock pot of boiling water, maybe two into the tub. Ill leave that to soak over night with a cup of lime.

I will cover it with a lid and a towel and allow it to cool slowly.
After a nights soak, ill take the bag out and place it in a strainer and allow it to drip.

Then i will open the bag, introduce my spawn, mix the hell out of it, and re-tie the bag closed and place that in a tote for colonization.

Question:

How often do i water  the bag? I know i would mist it daily from the outside, but is that enough?

You don't need to soak in pasteurization temps over night.  In fact that will probably be counter productive.  Just do it for 1.5 hours or so.  The oysters will definitely grow through the burlap but if the weave is really tight you could also poke some holes.  This is what mine looked like:

http://chrissyt.smugmug.com/Mushroom2010/Burlap-oyster/15263332_pGvac#1141914845_z6Cfj

Hard to say moisture wise.  I didn't spray mine every day but my bag was pretty big.  if the burlap bag stays soggy it'll only cause contam issues.  It would be better to give it a good wet down less often so the inner straw stays moist but the bag has a chance to dry off.  Mold will have trouble getting a hold of dry burlap.

Awesome, you have taken a bunch off my plate! I will use what i have as a first grow and see if i want to produce a larger crop.

If i like growing the oysters then i will try on a milk crate level, then a laundry basket. That will give me plenty of time to secure straw.

I've been thinking about the straw substrate i will be using, I plan to boil a pot of water, submerge the bag in the water and place a weight on top of it. I'll add a cup of lime and let that cook for an hour at 160 F.

the reason im not using a tub in tub is just because i only have 2.2 pounds to soak and that should fit in my stock pot fine.

I love how much you can recycle stuff in this hobby, i bought some pillows and i get three large humidity tents for free hehe

I would try to follow RR's straw log tek as closely as possible:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12702122#12702122

If you do choose to use a pot on your oven don't put the straw in the boiling water and let the temp come down to 180f so when you add the pre-soaked straw the temp will be around 140-160f.

It should not matter, I personally always use a laundry bag since it makes it a lot easier to submerge and remove the straw from the water but I'm sure the burlap bag will work just the same.

Re: Golden oyster mushroom grow [Re: themycoman]

Awesome, Ill just use it in the bag. first a presoak with soapy water for an hour or two then into 180 degree water and allow it to stabilize at 160 for one hour.

If the temp drops below 140 ill turn my stove back on. I have a small meat thermometer i will take readings with. I also have a couple digital thermometers i could use as well. i even have a wireless one for BBQ'ing.

Im still back and forth about this, As i watch RR's videos i notice how easy it is and wonder if i shouldn't just replicate it with my tub in tub.

I think what i will do is take the tub in tub into the kitchen and place it on the floor next to the stove, I'll boil as much waster as i can at one time and pour that over some lime.

what I hope is the water wont cool off too much as i am filling it, I am sure ill need to stop and boil more water so there would be a few minute lag. then i will weigh down the pre soaked bag with a dumb bell weight.

I will make sure the temp isnt above 180 when i add the bag. Ill try to hold the temp at 160 for 60 minutes. adding more boiling water if it goes under 140 within that 60 minutes.

Sorry if i repeat myself, i just want to get this down.

You will want to use rye berries since it will be needed to be spawned to straw and I don't think BRF would work for that unless you want to fruit it as cakes without straw.

Also justparanoid be careful when spawning the rye to the straw so none of the grains are exposed on the outside of the straw since that can lead to contamination.

Yes you will want to empty all the straw out and then repack in layers with the spawn.

If it is a shotgun style FC it will fruit outside well but the only way I could think to protect it from bugs is to use mosquito mesh like you would use to screen in a pool around the outside of the tub to cover the holes.

Oysters need much more FAE so a mono-tub style tub with polyfill would not work well.

Although I'm considering making one for Shiitake soon with more holes than a normal mono-tub and using micropore tape that I think would allow more FAE then polyfill.

If your burlap bag has enough mass you can fruit it outside without a FC.  Just spray it down every day or two.  I guess if you live in a super dry area it might not work but it works fine for me.  That doesn't really help with snails.  Sluggo works pretty well.  A copper strip that blocks access to the bag may keep them away.  I've never tried it but I've heard it works well for slugs.

mist as often as you can
