Question for gun owners
    #13782035 -

Disclaimer:  I come in peace.  I am not here to take away your guns or extend the waiting period or anything like that.  I'm just trying to inquire about your interest in guns.  Please don't shoot.

So, what's the deal?  What do you get out of guns?  I mean, I understand having a hunting rifle, and I think hunting can be a good thing compared to eating factory-farmed animals.  I also understand why you might want to be armed in case someone breaks into your house while you're there, however unlikely that might be.  But those are practical concerns, and would just make guns another tool.  What I don't get is the whole "gun enthusiast" thing.  What's so awesome about guns that you'd want to arm yourself to the teeth?  I've shot a shotgun and a rifle before, and I suppose it was fun, but not enough to spend thousands of dollars building an arsenal.  What is it about guns that gets people drooling over some assault rifle?

I don't get it.

I once had a 22 rifle for varmint control, but never bought a handgun.  I imagine your question is probably mostly aimed at pistol/revolver owners.  I've been tempted to get a pistol, but there's several statistics that have stopped me from making that purchase.  The increased chance you'll shoot a family member/friend (thinking they are an intruder), and the chance you'll get shot with your own gun, are just two of those reasons.

I forget what percentage of all gunshot wounds are inflicted by the victim's gun - I think it's pretty high.  Those reasons, and cost I guess, are why I suppose I'm not in this thread's target audience

That said, I do enjoy going to the range and shooting off a couple hundred rounds every now and then.  I much prefer shooting skeet, though.  Still, I have no need to own a gun and the costs seem to outweigh the benefits anyway.

So, what's the deal?  What do you get out of girls?  I mean, I understand having a girl for the occasional booty call, and I think that can be a good thing compared to prostitution.  I also understand why you might want to have a girl-friend in case you had a rough day and need someone to talk to, however unlikely that might be.  But those are practical concerns, and would just make girls another object.  What I don't get is the whole "girlfriend/wife" thing.  What's so awesome about girls that you'd want to date one?  I've had sex a few times, and I suppose it was fun, but not enough to spend thousands of dollars and the time on a relationship.  What is it about girls that gets people drooling over an attractive woman?

Different hobbies for different people. Some people collect art some collect rocks some collect cars some collect guns etc. To each their own.

I have a small shotgun loaded with buckshot for home security. I will not be robbed.

Another thought on that analogy:  I have no interest in collecting hundreds of girls.  One is plenty for me.

I think you're wrong, there's 600,000,000 legally owned firearms in this
country, how many shootings in total are there? .0003% in comparison to
the number of legal firearms, just how many of those shootings were self
inflicted and how the hell can it be a high percentage

There's something about the cold, calculated beautifully mechanical nature of firearms that's fascinating to me.

I hunt, I go to the range, I've even participated in a few local competitions (got my ass whooped) and I like the peace and security that concealed carry gives me.

But over all, I just like guns. Just like people love cars or stamps or collecting fuckin china dolls. It's just something I'm supremely interested in.

Not even mentioning the history. Guns have made and broken nations, they've shaped the world for the past 400 years.

Neither do I, but it's hard to find someone who owns 100's of guns or has/had 100's of girls.

Gun enthusiasts are like any weapons enthusiasts. There's something that fascinates them about it. It could be the power of the weapon, the history, the art, the craftsmanship, the beauty, the rarity, the use, etc.

It's similar to why people collect knives, swords, axes, and other oddities that will rarely get any use at all.
