You have all missed the most obvious and useful reason that toilet seats have lids and that is so that you have a place to sit your melty cheese steak hogie when you are shaving at the bus station.

I like to put the lid down and sit when I'm chatting with my Fiancé who's having a bath, on the days we don't bathe together.

Also, my cat likes to knock stuff, so if we don't put the seat down, the tissue box ends up in the toilet.

Toilets were originally cat-baths, but someone quickly figured that you could use it for other purposes and the lid is a left-over from that.
