This

How the fuck did you not figure that out by yourself....

Hmmm sounds far fetched.  I've never thought of flushing the toilet as spraying bacteria around the room.  The water doesn't spray out of mine - it comes down the back and nothing comes out of the toilet.  Not even a little mist.

Mine either. No spray.

I don't see the toilet lid as anything more than cosmetic looks.
Some people just think it makes the room look better when it's out of use, if the lid is down?

If bacteria is going to get out of your toilet it doesn't need a huge opening, it will get out through the space left between the lid, and the actual toilet.

Lids = Pointless.

Do you guys not know how to read? Keep on leaving your lids up, keep on brushing your teeth with your own shit, and keep on thinking nothing gets sprayed anywhere.

"First is the confirmation of the existence of the aerosol effect, even though it is largely unrecognized. "Droplets are going all over the place—it's like the Fourth of July," said Gerba. "One way to see this is to put a dye in the toilet, flush it, and then hold a piece of paper over it" (8). Indeed, Gerba's studies have shown that the water droplets in an invisible cloud travel six to eight feet out and up, so the areas of the bathroom not directly adjacent the toilet are still contaminated. Walls are obviously affected, and in public or communal bathrooms, the partitions between stalls are definitely coated in the spray mist from the toilet"

"The greatest aerosol dispersal occurs not during the initial moments of the flush, but rather once most of the water has already left the bowl," according to Philip Tierno, MD, director of clinical microbiology and diagnostic immunology at New York University Medical Center and Mt. Sinai Medical Center."

"streptococcus, staphylococcus, E. coli and shigella bacteria, hepatitis A virus and the common cold virus are all common inhabitants of public bathrooms"

"Toilet seats have actually been determined to be the least infected place in the bathroom because the environment is too dry to support a large bacterial population (7). In accordance with that theory, the underside of the seat has a higher than average microbial population. The place in a restroom with the highest concentration of microbial colonies in restrooms is, surprisingly, the sink, due in part to accumulations of water where these organisms breed freely after landing their aerial journey."

Bollocks man,  do you know how much bacteria lives in your toothbrush anyway?

Thats why I sterilise my toothbrush everytime I use it by putting it under boiling hot water from the tap first.

You know your body is covered in bacteria right?  eek better go have a bleach bath  we need good bacteria to live and bad ones to build body resistance.

Just because you can't see spray doesn't mean it isn't there.

Think of when someone sneezes. You don't see much/any of what comes out but

Obviously flushing water in a toilet doesn't have the same ferocity as a sneeze but I'd bet there's always some spray.

My buddy drank a glass of toilet water before.

He maintained it would be perfectly fine to drink so we called him on it.

:yesnod: I wonder would he still hold the same sentiment.

There's no doubt in my mind there's tons of bacteria already thriving on your toothbrush.. especially considering it ventures into a perfectly designed habitat for bacteria twice, sometimes thrice a day. Shit on the other hand, is another story.

There's bacteria everywhere - and that's exactly why we don't keel over dead from it. Exposure is important, overexposure is an unnecessary risk and could lead to sickness.

You'll be covered in bacteria and shit (thus more bacteria) if you choose to stand next to the flushing toilet with the lid up.

The toilet lid probably helps some people think they're being cleaner.  But come on guys, as cultivators we should already understand this.  That lid doesn't form a seal against the bowl; those microbes from your shit are still going flying all over regardless.  And if you guys are worried about the bacteria in your toilet bowl getting on your toothbrush, you don't even want to know what's living in your washing machine and dryer...

so dogs and cats don't drink the water!

our toilet has this blue soap water that might kill them or something.

I'm sure some bacteria still gets spewn, but definitely not in a "six to eight feet out and up" sort of pattern.

Which is important, because if anyone read the article you would understand that sinks and walls are the most bacteria friendly surfaces in the bathroom, due to the water present that is needed by large colonies of bacteria to thrive.

I'm not a germophobe by any means, but I do feel the 3 seconds it takes to put to toilet seat down is not too much of a wasted effort.

At least the stuff living in my washing machine, dryer, bed and everywhere else has to go through my skin, then my internal defenses. Not the case with your toothbrush.

Even with a closed lid, fecal coliforms  are going to form not only all over your bathroom but all over your house.  They're on your skin, they're on your clothes, they're everywhere you haven't recently bleached.  Every time you move the air in the bathroom, open or close the lid, use the fan, AC, heater, etc. you're going to spread them.  Closing the lid when you flush helps reduce the spread a little bit WHEN YOU FLUSH.  But they're already all over the place anyway.

I sit on the toilet lid sometimes when I'm drying off. I'm glad it's there. I bet my 2 year old would see how much stuff he could jam in the toilet if the lid wasn't there.
