Why do toilets have lids?

Its not like its gonna keep the smell in or something?

What is the purpose of the lid? other than to piss me off because everyone thinks they should put the lid down so I have to touch this dirty thing every time I want to use the toilet.

Seriously theres no purpose in this lid why the fuck do toilets have them?

I've always wondered myself I figured it was an aesthetic thing so guests walking by don't see all your shit stains from blowing it up :blush:

Hmmm sounds far fetched.  I've never thought of flushing the toilet as spraying bacteria around the room.  The water doesn't spray out of mine - it comes down the back and nothing comes out of the toilet.  Not even a little mist.

So if you have a 2 year old, it doesn't try to take a bath by itself.

you don't have to touch the toilet.  you can leave the lid up and never touch it.  but it makes sense to have that option to close off the hole into which you defecate.

they have lids so that when you take a big nasty smelling shit you can put the lid down and not have to smell it.
