(Jazz-fusion/Experimental/Progressive/Math Rock) Come share!
    #13763596 -

Hello everybody, thought I'd take take this opportunity to share some of my favorite musical tastes in hopes for some of yours in return. I hope this thread can help expand my music bandwidth, and perhaps even yours! I'll start off naming some of the groups you would find on my mp3 player, accompanied by a link or two to a tune or tunes by that group that I am fond of. These groups or artists will mostly be in the genre of Jazz-Rock fusion, Progressive Rock, Experimental Rock, Math Rock; the list can go on and on, but i consider those fairly broad categories. I'll put *'s next to the artists I would consider to be on my top 15. I hope we can all get some cool new tunes out of this shin dig!

Strangely, it seems that very little of what you posted would be accurately described by the thread subject.  Did you do this on purpose in hopes that someone would come in and post some jazz fusion or experimental or something?  I wouldn't further malign the "progressive" moniker by applying it to most of what you posted either.  Not that it's necessarily bad music, it's just that most of it sticks very closely to western rock rhythmic and melodic forms that have been well worn over the past 60 years or so. I listened to or at least sampled almost every tune you posted so I don't think I missed anything.  How you gonna post a jazz-fusion/progressive music thread with no tunes, not counting the Beach Boys, pre-1990's?

Partly yes and no, my goal for this thread was to share some music, and hope to get some in return. You're right about my music not falling into the categories I named, I need to learn to be more careful and technical with my genres.. The genres I posted were ment to be a sort of guide line I guess. Also, I tried to only post things that I would think people haven't heard or would be new to. But you're right, this is all western music for the most part, and I should have clarified that. I do believe, though, that everything I posted would fall under either progressive or experimental in western terms, no? I'm still learning so feel free to correct me, its not like i have 30 years of musical knowledge under my belt. Here are some things that I was thinking of posting.

These fit more snug with the subject title, yes? And like I said, this thread does not have to be bound to the names of the genres i posted, I want this thread to be free flowing and friendly, without confines. So if anyone has something they think is worth sharing, please don't be shy, you will not be ridiculed here.

I like what you're trying to do here, but I don't think it has the appeal of the old Album Threads.  So here's a contribution from me:

Caribou - Swim

There's a link on this page to download the album.

I noticed you put a couple of Caribou's videos up, but none from this album.  This one is very distinct in that it's much more electronic than the others.  Gradually, this turned out to be my favorite Manitoba/Caribou album of all.

I'd like to get another album thread started.  I've been relying on Pitchfork for far too long now.

I'm mostly speaking of the Indie Album Thread, which you can find here.  If you're a fan of the style of music now known as indie (and you seem to be), you'll find a goldmine of good stuff in that thread.
Because of this thread, we can no longer link directly to the album.  The link you post here has to be to a page containing the link you wish to share.  Example:

Volcano Choir - Unmap
link to album. (do a google mediafire search for better quality)

Volcano Choir is a collaboration of Justin Vernon from Bon Iver and the previously instrumental band, Collections of Colonies of Bees.

Minus the Bear - OMNI

link

Great to see some love for Minus the Bear.  Here's their latest in case you missed it.  In spite of the rather negative (read: pretentious) review by Pitchfork, this album turned out to be a solid release.

Digging that Tortoise live set!  When I find some time I'm definitely gonna watch the rest of it.
