First mushrooms of the season (PICS!)
    #1369517 -

Well, I found these growing in the grass in my backyard. Not psychoactive, I know, but they're the first true "mushrooms" I've seen since November.
I really have no clue what they are. The spore print color(dark brown) makes me think they're some type of Agaricus. I don't think they're agaricus because they don't briuse a certain color and don't have a distinct odor. They have very closely set gills and seem to liquefy at the edges so they might be Coprinus.

Toxicman, Mr Mushrooms... whatcha' think?

Here's the pics:

Nice one gumby! I think I've seen them before..Are the caps "shaggy"?
Are the stalks somewhat brittle and hollow?
P.S. Any welli's yet?

The stalks are brittle and hollow, but they aren't conical enough to be shaggys and the spore print colors don't match :\

Those look like Coprinus atramentarius to me. They are scalier than most collections I see, but they are sometimes pretty scaly. And if we want to go with the name some mycologists want it to become then it is Coprinopsis atramentaria.

In the fourth photo, the appearance of the stem and the way the gills are changing color are both very typical of Coprinus species. The growth habit in clusters in grass in the first two photos is also typical of this species.

Edible if eaten when the gills are still white and you must not have any alcohol for about 3 days afterward. They contain a toxin which is similar in effect to antabuse. I've eaten them before and they weren't anything special. Not much flavor or texture or much of anything else to recommend them, really.

Nice find, though, and excellent photos.

Happy mushrooming!

Ain't it the best when you find the first mushrooms of the year? I was like that too when I found some weird ugly white mushroom growing off of some mulch... I took pictures of it and I was like.. YES! A MUSHROOM!!

You're lucky...the season is just starting for you, and just ending for me :frown:

You musta not been looking to hard during the winter gumby. Mushrooms fruit year round, I've been seeing galerinas since early janurary. You can always find a "true" mushroom in GA anytime of the year if you look hard enough.

Nice healthy cluster of fungi you have there, I'll let you know when the morels are up, I think there might be a few pins in the patch, I just haven't had the time to check, it was march 22 last year I found the first morel, this year its warmed up earlier and I wouldn't be suprised to see the great morels up a week early, all we lack is rain at the moment, but I think that problem will be cured tonight and tommarow.

when can I start picking 'shrooms here in the UK? I live in a wet, forested area so I'm sure the conditions will be right, just when should I go looking?

All three of these images, the first two are Coprinus and the third is an unidentified Gymnopilus, which was fruiting in stable shavings at the Trails end riding stable in Washingotn state.

All three pictures were photographed in the same local, which was mostly horse manure and stable shavings and composting materials.

The pictures were taken on march 2 with my digital camera.

I have also been lucky to see many Galerinas shooting up in muclh in the trees where I live. But since i have many photos I saw no need to take more.
